The Ohio State University Global One Health initiative, with the support of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (#CDC) IHR/CARES project, supplied the Amhara Public Health Institute with necessary malaria microscopy consumables, including microscopic slides, blood collection lancets and Giemsa Stain reagents. These supplies will help strengthen the malaria testing capacity in health facilities in the region. Overall, the IHR/CARES project aims to increase malaria diagnostic capacity to ensure reliable and timely diagnosis and treatment of patients. 🌍 Today marks #MalariaDay2024, a reminder of the ongoing battle against a disease that affects millions worldwide. Amidst the complexity of fever-related illnesses, especially in low- and middle-income countries, accurate diagnostics are essential. World Health Organization emphasizes the importance of testing all suspected malaria cases before treatment. Yet, the default prescription of broad-spectrum antibiotics when tests are negative poses risks, from ineffective treatment to fueling antimicrobial resistance. At FIND, we are committed to supporting the development of new tools that can improve triage and differential diagnosis at the point of care, including next-generation malaria tests needed for disease elimination, alongside generating data to inform implementation and scale-up of new approaches to improve access to diagnosis of febrile illnesses (such as electronic clinical decision aids). Always an #Aha moment as I pause and reflect on the sheer magnitude of what Unitaid does. I'm am proud to be part of a fantastic #board, which balances representation of board members from #lmic & #highincome countries. Unitaid is truly a pathfinder, influencer and an #equitable #access champion🏆. Working with other global health institutions, this slim organisation manages to also undertake market shaping, implementation studies, community engagement and #demand #creation at a country-level. We are looking at a future where #health and #climateadaptation & #resilience meet Regional production of #innovative and #green production of these therapeutics, including #monoclonal #antibodies for all #lmics. At current point, Africa only hold 1% of that maeket. Even with bourgeoning non-communicable diseases and localised #pandemics, the horizon is bright.🌞 Support this work in any way you can and we can look forward to this future where #syndemics are prepared for and efficiently addressed. But given that biological warfare knows no boarders, we also call on #African leaders start #financially contributing to #Agenda2063 through the African Medicines Agency (AMA). The coronavirus pandemic outbreak of 2019 highlighted the critical importance of preparedness for current and future public health threats. To address the urgent need for new drugs to combat drug-resistant malaria, emerging zoonotic diseases, and vector control, Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) and Innovative Vector Control Consortium (IVCC) assembled a collection of 240 compounds and, in August 2022, launched the Global Health Priority Box. This collection of compounds has confirmed activity against emerging pathogens or vectors and is available free of charge.
