The challenge of attaining gender equality is much bigger than merely “slow progress”. There’s an active regress. Even worse, the regress is being actively championed and orchestrated by a growing group of anti-women extremists. Yes, there’s an active crusade against gender equality. It is no longer enough to simply do more of what we used to do. Our quest for #genderequality must also include strategies and concrete interventions to address the backslide and the backlash behind the regress.

This is it...this is why I keep doing what I do, and encouraging others to fight relentlessly for gender equality. It is so disheartening to read from the findings that a girl born today will have to wait until her 97th birthday (beyond her expected lifespan 😠) to see gender equality achieved globally. We are in a perilous state particularly looking at the multiple intersecting crises and more than ever why we need an #intersectionality approach to solve the emerging challenges linking resources,democracy, safety and security.

We are seeing this same trend in India with the country's poorest performance being in SDG 5 Gender Equality as reported by NITI Aayog in the Sustainable Development Goals Index, 2023-24. An abysmal national average score of 49 out of 100, with 12 states and one Union Territory which scored even lower than the national average and Odisha as the worst performing state with a score 39 out of 100.

According to the findings from 2024 SDG Gender Index: - NO COUNTRY IS ON TRACK TO ACHIEVE GENDER EQUALITY BY 2030; - If current trends continue, global gender equality won’t be achieved until the 22nd century. - A girl born today will have to wait until her 97th birthday – beyond her expected lifespan – to celebrate an equal society. As we prepare for the Summit of the Future, I’ve been thinking about the powerful findings from the 2024 SDG Gender Index from Equal Measures 2030. #GenderEquality is key to achieving nearly 75% of the SDGs. Yet due to polycrisis, including climate change, economic instability, conflict, and political shifts including anti-feminist and anti-rights attacks, we could be on track for gender equality to be WORSE in 2030 than when we negotiated the SDGs in 2015. When I walk into the United Nations for the Summit in less than two weeks, I hope to hear Member States making specific, measurable commitments to accelerate progress on gender equality, including reducing gender-based violence and maternal mortality-though I don’t really expect it to happen. The #PactForTheFuture needs stronger commitments, and most importantly we need those actionable, funded commitments at the national level, if we are to start to turn this tide on gender inequality and address the 8 looming crises facing women and girls. We are deeply troubled by the global backsliding on gender equality. The 2024 SDG Gender Index highlights a troubling reality: nearly 40% of countries are stagnating or declining on gender equality, with hard-won gains at risk of being erased by anti-feminist rhetoric, challenges to reproductive rights, political and economic instability, and climate change. These challenges are significant and underscore the need for platforms like WAIV Magazine, showcasing women at the forefront of AI and tech.
