Swiss survey finds people taking risks with food to save money By Joe Whitworth on November 1, 2024 A survey in Switzerland has found that higher living costs have had a negative impact on the food safety behavior of consumers, according to a recently released report. The general cost of living and especially energy prices have risen sharply since April 2022. More than 1,200 people in Switzerland were surveyed in February 2024 about their behavior in reaction to this situation. About half of participants said they had adjusted their standard of living. Just under a quarter had used less energy since the price rises in 2022. The study, commissioned by the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (FSVO), determined the extent to which the Swiss population reacted to the energy crisis with regard to food safety. The aim was to identify potential risky behavior to help with risk communication messages. Findings were published in the journal Food Risk Assess Europe.

I Contracted Food Poison on #WorldFoodSafetyDay World Food Safety Day was set up to draw attention and enhance collaboration in detecting, preventing and managing risks due to consumption of contaminated and unwholesome foods all around the world. The goal is to contribute to global access to safe foods from farm to fork while also protecting the planet. That same day, on the busy street of Lagos somewhere around Isaac John GRA, Ikeja our team stopped to fill our insatiable appetite for nutritious food not knowing we were eating contaminated foods. The rest of the story wasn't anything to write home about. This is a very well-known local food parlour visited by many working in banks, offices and hospitality within the area. The need to ensure we are served nutritious and wholesome foods is a fundamental right that must not be denied anybody. Food Poisoning is caused by infectious microbes and their toxins in poorly prepared foods, symptoms often include vomiting, diarrhoea, sore throat, stomach upset and in cases of severe poisoning hospitalization. A Government Health and Sanitation team should be set up to define food safety standards in all bukaterias. To the agribusiness professionals, there is an opportunity for traceability solutions from farms to the bukas, restaurants and food shops. With this one can quickly identify the point of deviation or breach in the food supply chain. I come in peace

An interesting article written by our partners from Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), Ms Anouk de Vries and Mr Faiz Rasool on "World Food Safety Day" that highlights the critical significance of food safety and the our preparation against unexpected events including natural disasters, power outages, or political changes, that can disrupt food availability and safety. It also highlighted some alarming fact of unsafe food that causes over 420,000 deaths and 600 million illnesses yearly, particularly the situation is critical in low- and middle-income countries with weaker food safety infrastructures. Hello Fam, today is the 6th edition of World Food Safety Day which is being commemorated under the theme "Prepare for the Unexpected" This draws our attention to food safety incidents, that cause 1 out of 10 people worldwide fall ill from contaminated food each year. We have so many unhealthy food products in the market which causes food poisoning and the development of #NCDs. Access to sufficient amounts of safe food is key to sustaining life and promoting good health. Food safety has a critical role in assuring that food stays safe at every stage of the food chain, from production to harvest, processing, storage, distribution, all the way to preparation and consumption. The main agenda of this day is to ensure that, the food we eat is safe, mainstream food safety in the public agenda. Let's keep food safe and improve our health. #foodsafety #ActonNCDs World Health Organization World Food Programme CAMEROUN MINSANTE/SDLMCNT All followers

#Foodsafety l Today is World Food Safety Day. Every year, a tenth of the world population – some 600 million people – falls ill due to contaminated food. Lack of food safety causes an estimated 420,000 deaths per year. The economic burden of unsafe food is heavy, especially for middle- and low-income countries: according to the World Bank, food-borne illnesses cost these countries up to US$110 billion per year. In the European Union, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) reports several thousand of cases each year – and the numbers are increasing, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). Bureau Veritas supports players across the food industry with a full range of Certification for Food Safety. Our Certification enables our clients to meet the highest safety and quality standards, gain access to international markets, and fulfill their regulatory requirements. Key benefits of food safety certification are securing market access, earning customer trust, increasing operational control and earning worldwide recognition. #ShapingaWorldofTrust #WorldFoodSafetyDay

FOOD SAFETY: UK SURVEY REVEALS KNOWLEDGE GAPS IN IMPORTED EGGS-At the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health’s ( #CIEH )Food Safety Conference, I presented the results from a recent survey of over a hundred chefs in the United Kingdom which found confusion around serving imported eggs to vulnerable groups. The June 2024 poll by The Staff Canteen, a UK chef network, found that British Lion eggs are widely served and their food safety credentials are well understood. However, 37 percent of respondents were unaware that the Food Standards Agency ( #FSA) does not approve imported eggs for serving runny to vulnerable groups. British Lion eggs are FSA approved so operators can confidently serve them to customers however they like, including runny to vulnerable groups. Imported eggs do not come with the same assurances! I believe the safety record of British Lion eggs seems to have left people with the impression that all eggs are safe to serve to vulnerable groups. This is not true and is very concerning. Chefs need to think carefully about what’s on the menu. I also presented on The British Egg Industry Councils recently launched updated Code of Practice for producing Lion Quality egg products. Such as pasteurise liquid egg. Please see link here: https://lnkd.in/e85nsKgp Version 3 includes 64 new criteria, incorporates industry advice, and provides specific measures and controls. It sets standards across all production systems, from when eggs are laid to delivery to manufacturers and food service operators. It is a pleasure and privilege to be the Independent Scientific and Regulatory Advisor to the British Lion mark. Who use the very latest in evidence based scientific knowledge and research to maintain the safety assurance provided by their Code of Practice. Your thoughts on imported eggs? As we celebrate the World Food Safety Day today June 7, 2024, let us remember that Food Safety is everyone's business. Although dedicated efforts from government authorities, policy makers, standard organizations, farmers and the food industry is required to ensure that food is safe to eat, consumers also play an important role as the last point of contact with the food before consumption. Handling and storage conditions of food at our homes also have effect on its safety. Having the basic knowledge of food safety hazards including biological hazards (bacteria contamination, e.g. salmonella and Listeria monocytogens); chemical hazards (allergen cross-contact, pesticide); and physical hazards (foreign materials, e.g. metals, stones, plastics) and how to avoid their presence in the food we eat will go along way in guaranteeing food safety. Also, when we are in doubt about whether food is safe to eat or not, it is better to throw it out than to end up getting food poisoning. This year, our attention has been drawn to the fact that not only the food safety hazards mentioned above can lead to foodborne illnesses. Unforseen situations, such as flood, power outages, food fraud, and other natural disasters can lead to food safety incidents, causing potential or confirmed health risk to consumers. We are encouraged to prepare for these incidents no matter how mild or serious they are. We can prepare by having a good plan for food preservation in case of power outages and the likes, and taking a decisive action that would ensure food safety. That is why the theme for this year's World Food Safety Day is - Food Safety: prepare for the unexpected. #worldfoodsafetyday
