In an Australian first, we’re partnering with Ramsay Health Care to develop the next generation of nurses through a new program, starting next year. It’ll see graduate nurses from Bupa and Ramsay Health Care given the opportunity take a three-month exchange, trading places and gaining valuable experience across aged care and hospital settings.   Managing Director Bupa Villages & Aged Care Australia Andrew Kinkade said with Australia’s population ageing and increased care needs, it’s important that we continue to evolve to meet those needs. “The new partnership is the first time an aged care organisation has offered graduate nurses the opportunity to work and learn in a hospital setting as part of their graduate experience. At the same time, Ramsay graduates have the opportunity to get experience in providing care an aged care setting,” he said.    Ramsay Health Care’s Chief Nurse and Clinical Services Director, Associate Professor Assoc. Professor Bernadette Eather, said the program was a great professional development opportunity for graduates. “The program will offer our graduates comprehensive clinical experience and the development of key skills for managing aged care patients who can experience a variety of short and long-term health issues, as well as complex issues like dementia. These are important skills for nurses in hospitals and residential aged care homes, given our nation’s ageing population,” A/Professor Eather said. This partnership is another example of how Ramsay and Bupa are working together to deliver better health outcomes and value for patients and residents, while supporting the next generation of nurses to grow their skill sets even further. Did you know that changes to the IQN competence assessment have been announced by the Nursing Council? Now, two tests for competent assessment will take the place of CAP. Internationally Qualified Nurses (IQNs) will now have to complete a competency assessment administered by the Nursing Council, which consists of an objective structured clinical exam (OSCE) and a theoretical exam. Theoretical exam This online exam measures conceptual and theoretical knowledge. Clinical exam; This exam comprises an Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE), a three-hour clinical examination, and a two-day orientation and preparation course on a different day. Both the OSCE and the orientation and preparation course are offered in person in New Zealand at accredited locations. International Nurses Day, observed on May 12th to coincide with the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth, indeed highlights the critical role nurses play in healthcare. Florence Nightingale, often regarded as the founder of modern nursing, initiated profound changes in the healthcare sector, particularly in the areas of sanitation and hospital care. The day serves as an opportunity to appreciate and acknowledge the immense contributions nurses make to society. Despite their vital role, nurses often face significant challenges. Financial constraints are a major issue, as many nurses are underpaid relative to their responsibilities and the critical nature of their work. This is compounded by the high stress and emotional toll of their jobs, which can lead to burnout. Additionally, the profession is frequently undervalued, both in terms of societal recognition and professional development opportunities. Countries within the World Health Organisation (WHO) European Region, and globally, are encouraged to use International Nurses Day not only to celebrate but also to address these issues by advocating for better working conditions, fair compensation, and greater recognition of the nursing profession's importance. Research Project Survey - Are you an advanced practice registered nurse working in Australia? You are invited to participate in a research project that aims to understand advanced practice registered nurses experience of clinical supervision for professional support and development. What does it involve? 1. An anonymous online short answer survey capturing demographic information about advanced practice registered nurses and their professional support and development needs, estimated to take 5-10 minutes. And / or 2. Advanced practice registered nurses who participate in clinical supervision (or reflective practice groups) are invited to take part in a semi-structured interview to share your experience. Participation is voluntary. This situation has been exacerbated by the recent pandemic, compromising the mental health and wellbeing of many healthcare professionals. With an estimated shortfall of over 6 million nurses worldwide, it is time to call for caring systems which support the wellbeing and professional development of nurses, so they are enabled to provide safe high-quality patient care for longer. Clinical supervision is a transformative, adult learning approach to professional development using critical reflection, proven to be effective in restorative, formative and normative support. Little is known about clinical supervision for nurses working in advanced practice, an area calling on skills in clinical practice, leadership, education, system support, and research. This qualitative interpretive study aims to explore the experience of clinical supervision for advanced practice nurses and the meaning for professional development in the domains of clinical practice, leadership, education, system support and research.
