Today is 🌎 👫 Human Rights Day! Human Rights Day is important to us because one of the most common sustainability risks in the food sector is related to human rights such as forced or child labour, and labour rights such as fair remuneration and working hours. Our long-term relationships with suppliers help us to understand the human rights risks and other sustainability issues in our supply chains better. This requires systematic, long-term work. How have implemented it in our work recently❓ ✔️In 2024, we conducted in-depth human rights impact assessments in Thailand as part of our human rights work, working with local and international human rights experts from KPMG. ✔️We have several contract manufacturing suppliers in Thailand, and we have identified that the majority of them employ migrant workers from the neighbouring countries of Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar. ✔️The purpose of this pilot was to conduct a human rights deep dive to assess actual and potential adverse impacts, but most importantly, to listen to and give a voice to those rarely heard - the migrant workers themselves. ✔️Before the actual assessment visits, we reached out to international organisations and had discussions with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) representatives in Thailand on topics faced by migrant workers. ✔️Both of our suppliers respect the principles of responsible recruitment, including the Employer Pays Principle. This enables migrant workers to start their employment without debt and additionally, there is more income available for living when documents need to be renewed over time by the employer. ✔️Building strong collaborative relations with our suppliers is essential. Increasing knowledge and building capacity on human rights for our suppliers is something we continue to build on also in the future with other partnering organisations. ✔️ The collaboration provides us with a solid framework to continue developing our work. We are proud of the role we played in the research that was crucial in driving the important policy reform. The research conducted by Rapid Asia on behalf of ILO in 2022 confirmed the unequal treatment and lack of basic labour protection mechanisms for domestic migrant workers in Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. The report, "Skilled to care, forced to work?" highlighted the urgent need for policy reforms to address issues such as minimum wage, and forced labour. We're proud to share that evidence-based research has led to significant change in Thailand! The Royal Thai Government has recently launched new regulations to protect the rights of domestic workers, ultimately improving their living conditions. This development demonstrates the power of concrete and simple data in driving real and sustainable change. “You need Post Arrival Orientation (PAO) to have a sustainable and happy workplace. Currently in Malaysia we are highly dependent on migrant workers. We need to welcome them and make sure they are safe and know their rights”, shared by Shreen Xaviar, Senior Manager of R&D and Sustainability at the Malaysian Palm Oil Association (MPOA). A multi-stakeholder dialogue on the ethical recruitment and employment of migrant workers, jointly organized by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Fair Labour Association (FLA), and the Consumer Goods Forum - Human Rights Coalition (CGF-HRC), with the support of the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities, recently brought together key business and government stakeholders. The event aimed to discuss critical topics related to eliminating forced labour and promoting the protection of migrant workers' rights in the palm oil supply chain. Additionally, the event featured a workshop to finalize the development of Post-Arrival Orientation (PAO) modules for migrant workers in the palm oil sector. These modules aim to empower migrant workers with the information needed to navigate challenges and adapt to living and working in Malaysia, while also reducing their vulnerability to labour risks. IOM is committed to continuing these collaborative efforts, working alongside all stakeholders to build a more ethical, sustainable, and just palm oil supply chain. IOM will continue working to ensure dignity, equality, and protection for every worker.

📣𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗶𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀📣 As we tackle the urgent issue of labor violations in global supply chains, it's essential to highlight the role of recruitment practices. Often, migrant workers face recruitment fees charged by local labor agents or recruitment agencies, while employers neglect their responsibility to cover these costs (Employer Pays Principle), this can lead to debt bondage. Additionally, many promises of good working conditions go unfulfilled, leaving low-income migrants vulnerable in sectors marked by informality and lacking labor rights protections. Our advisory team is committed to identifying and addressing the risks associated with forced labor indicators in global supply chains, especially for migrant workers. Personally, working on responsible recruitment projects inspires and motivates me in my role as a sustainability consultant. #ResponsibleRecruitment #MigrantWorkers #HumanRights #Sustainability #SupplyChain #EmployerPaysPrinciple

It’s such a wonderful opportunity to collaborate with KPMG Finland for human rights impact assessment. I have seen the commitment of the buyer to respect for human rights. They use their leverage to ensure that the human rights is also respected in their supply chain. Human Rights Due Diligence should not just be done for the sake of ticking out the box. The human rights risk assessment should include the engagement with stakeholders, especially those who are impacted or might be impacted from business operation. The information from the engagement session provides more valuable insights. It is still a long hard way for Thailand but It is indeed a hearth-fulfilling project. One more to go Hanna-Riitta Kurittu
Part I of a 2-week human rights impact assessment successfully completed! Attended a talk today on Protecting Human and Labour Rights by Ms Umavathni Vathanaganthan and it was an eye-opening talk especially on the topic of forced labour along with business and human rights. A few key takeaways are on ESG (Environment, Social, and Governance) and the role they play in protecting human and labour rights. Also how especially Malaysia mitigate issues on forced labour and migrant workers rights. Not to mention, the challenges and expectations when Malaysia finally implement the National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights (NAPBHR)
