ER Closures are Putting Lives at Risk Another long weekend has passed with no Emergency Room coverage in many Interior Health communities. This is not acceptable. The NDP government has allowed our healthcare system to reach crisis levels over their 7 years in office, and the problem worsens yearly. As winter approaches, we all know the roads will be dangerous. Having to travel long distances for emergency care is not okay. Our families deserve better. Under our Patients First policy, the Conservative Party of BC will focus on keeping ERs open, ensuring that healthcare is accessible for all, and putting patients—not bureaucrats—at the system's centre. It’s time for a government that delivers on healthcare. Let’s bring common sense back to BC. #VoteDonegalWilson #PatientsFirst #ERClosures #HealthcareCrisis #CommonSenseBC

We take a lot for granted in Australia. Our health care system is not perfect and affordability is an issue for many, particularly those on low incomes. But unlike hospital patients in PNG, we take quality and availability of medical supplies as a given, and not having to make do with what we in Australia consider waste. When SOS sends the clean and usable medical supplies we save from landfill to PNG, these supplies arrive on pallets. Health care facilities there are so in need they even use these pallets to make hospital beds. That is why SOS is proud to play a role in global initiatives which focus on making healthcare accessible to all people - no matter where they are in the world. Today, Emma Bingham, and Gemma Lelliott spoke at the Rural Health and Care Wales Conference 2024 in Builth Wells to share insights on the essential role of community transport in healthcare. They shared how PIVOT (part of Pembrokeshire Association of Community Transport Organisations) supports patients by providing transport home from hospital—reducing admissions and shortening stays. In 2023/24 alone, if each journey home saved just one bed day, this translated to an impressive £145,755 in savings for the hospital and health board. Passengers quotes echo this positive impact: 🚗 “Transport helps us live better lives.” 🚐 “I have my independence through Community Transport, and my family doesn’t need to be involved in my treatment yet.” Reliable transport is crucial for health and wellbeing, yet it’s often overlooked in healthcare planning. Strengthening connections between health, care, and transport services can help address these gaps and reduce inequality. #RuralHealth #CommunityTransport #HealthAndWellbeing #Partnership

A Collaborative Approach to Fixing BC’s Healthcare System: Action required from Everyone please! The recent formation of a coalition of BC mayors focused on addressing the ongoing ER closures is a welcome step toward finding real solutions to the province's healthcare challenges. Fixing the healthcare system requires involvement from all stakeholders—local leaders, healthcare professionals, and government officials—and it's wonderful to see the mayors stepping up to help with the logistics and healthcare needs in their regions. This kind of collaboration is exactly what’s needed to tackle the complexity of healthcare issues. We know what many of the problems are, and we need to find actionable solutions that work for all communities. We need all hands on deck from all levels of government and the community to make real progress. The commitment from mayors to create a unified front for healthcare in their regions is a promising sign that, with collective effort, we can make significant improvements for the well-being of our communities. ER closures are dangerous and I'm glad to see that big changes are being made. #HealthcareCollaboration #RuralHealth #BCHospitals #CommunityLeadership #HealthcareSolutions #EmergencyCare #BCMayors #Teamwork #HealthEquity #LocalLeadership #BetterHealthcare

Every time I go to the hospital (this time I’ve been here all night with a broken rib), I get reminded of how much everywhere needs some serious perspective on the state of our healthcare system: It's time we take a hard look, Ottawa. Our hospitals are overwhelmed—there simply aren't enough rooms, beds, or medical staff to accommodate the growing number of patients. This crisis leads to paramedics being stuck on "offload delay" for hours, sometimes even days, unable to reach critically injured individuals in time because they can't leave their patients unattended in the ambulance bay. I once spoke with a paramedic who spent 12 hours in an ambulance bay with a patient, went home for a brief rest, and then returned to find the same patient still waiting. This isn't an isolated incident—it's a reflection of a system in dire need of reform. In a field where every second counts, the lack of resources is costing lives. Instead of focusing on luxury condos and shopping malls, we should be investing in hospitals, specialized care centers, and medical facilities that can actually save lives. Our climate poses unique challenges that exacerbate health issues, yet our response is woefully inadequate. Moreover, while affordable housing is essential, it's not a standalone solution for homelessness. People need comprehensive medical care—both physical and mental—to be in a position where they can work and sustain themselves. Simply providing a roof over their heads doesn't address the root issues. We must prioritize funding for medical resources to help people get back on their feet and contribute to society. It's time for Ottawa to wake up and invest in what truly matters—healthcare. Let's channel our resources into building a city that can support its people, especially the most vulnerable among us. #ottawahealthcare #ottawamedicalsystem #ottawahospitals #levelzero

Dr Becks Fisher of the Nuffield Trust makes the pertinent point that even if you implemented the reforms outlined in the report below, it wouldn't make much of a dent until you address the crisis in social care and public health. Investment into safe, affordable and sustainable housing is a key mechanism in terms of improving health outcomes. It's not just about the bricks and mortar. Homes, and decent affordable/social homes at that, are an invest to save proposition. Our own work at CIH Cymru, as part of the #backthebill campaign in Wales with Shelter Cymru and Tai Pawb to incorporat the right to adequate housing into Welsh law, showed that a decent and accessible home for everyone in Wales would save the public purse £11.5bn against an investment of £5bn. We need to be radical and look beyond the political cycle if we are to solve the twin crises in our NHS and housing system....we can't solve one without solving the other! We need to make housing a foundation mission of government, through a rights-based approach, as a means to improve public health and therefore drastically reduce demand on the NHS.
No extra NHS funding without reform, says PM
