On a CNC lathe, turning is the most common operation. In this operation, a single-point cutting tool is used to shape a rotating workpiece. The workpiece is reduced in diameter to the desired cylindrical shape by the tool, which is rotated at a precise angle and feed rate and removes material from it as it does so. For sections with a constant diameter, the toolpath can be straight; for shapes that are tapered or curved, it can follow a programmed contour.
