🌲 Have you ever wandered through an ancient woodland? 🌲 They’re one of the richest habitats in the UK - home to thousands of species. Now they cover only 2.5% of our land. Our nature reserve, Briddlesford Woods, is an ancient woodland on the Isle of Wight. We’ve been enhancing its flora and fauna for over 30 years and, as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, it’s protected as one the country’s best wildlife sites. Over the next few years, we’re creating a beautiful mixture of habitats to further support the rich variety of species that call it home. Ancient woodland can’t be replaced, so once lost, these woods have gone forever. If you can help us with a gift today, it’ll be doubled as part of the Big Give #GreenMatchFund, at no cost to you and will go towards protecting this unique and important habitat. Could you help? Whatever you give will be doubled! 👉 https://bit.ly/4cSE03K

Well done NCC on a comprehensive article.
Baboon Proofing Your Property There can be no doubt that the Cape Peninsula is a beautiful place to call home. We are privileged to live in a global biodiversity hotspot where much of the land abutting the urban edge is national park. Living so close to nature is both a privilege and a responsibility and it is important to be cognisant of the fact that our behaviour can significantly affect the behaviour of the wildlife around us. Baboons are perhaps the most challenging species to live alongside owing to their intelligence, agility, and opportunistic nature, but by baboon-proofing your home, you can reduce these challenges considerably. Much of the West of the UK was long ago covered with temperate rainforest, a rare ecological landscape that was home to unique plant species. (For more info on this incredible, forgotten history, check out Guy Shrubsole's 'The Lost Rainforests of Britain', published by HarperCollins Publishers.) Today, less that 1% of Britain is home to ancient rainforest, so it is encouraging to read that a tract of Pembrokeshire, West Wales, will undergo a 100-year rewilding project to restore its natural abundance, with support from The Wildlife Trusts and funding from Business in the Community member Aviva. Ecological restoration and proactive rewilding are not only crucial for protecting the planet by reintroducing carbon capturing trees and plants, they can also play an important role in helping local #communities and places to connect with nature and the environment. https://lnkd.in/e78ndvwq

Wildlife presence is an indicator of habitat quality, suggests Artur, hydrobiologist at Rewilding Oder Delta in our film Why Not Scotland?. 🌱 But the natural world is our habitat, too. If wildlife is in decline, what does that mean for humans? 💚 We are part of nature, not apart from it. Let’s restore the natural landscapes we all depend on for food, water and our wellbeing. Many years ago, Persina Island, briefly parting the Danube River in two only to reunite its waters shortly after, has grown quiet. Silence in nature can be haunting as it speaks back to us that something has gone wrong. The wetland on the island, once a symphony of life, was now long lost. And with them the home of countless wildlife species. 💧Persina Nature Park Directorate set out to restore this wilderness area by recreating the natural flooding of the wetland. This became possible through a series of ambitious projects implemented over several years. However, even after the critical restoration the water supply from the river to the wetland was often not enough. As part of The #LivingDanubePartnership, efforts were made to further improve the water supply, ultimately bringing back life to the area. And finally this happened. As the water returned, so did the fish, birds, amphibians, and, eventually, one very important species... 👏 Today, we celebrate the return of the magnificent Dalmatian pelican to Persina Island. This bird is an indicator species, signaling that this once-neglected ecosystem is now thriving again. 🌍This win for nature is one of many achievements made possible by the Living Danube Partnership thanks to the joint efforts of WWF-CEE, The Coca-Cola Foundation and the ICPDR in the course of 7 years. The partnership involved a wide network of collaborators, from water, nature, and forest managers to municipalities, county governments, landowners, anglers, hunters, and entrepreneurs. All of them have come and worked together to restore rivers and wetlands for the benefit of people and nature. Enjoy some of the success stories of the Living Danube Partnership by watching the short film here🎬https://lnkd.in/eC8pqduE Photo credit: © Persina Nature Park Directorate #RipplesOfChange #WWF #GreenHeartOfEurope #LivingDanube

🌍🐘 This World Elephant Day, we shine a spotlight on the majestic elephants that grace the Aberdare ecosystem. These magnificent creatures are not only symbols of our natural heritage but also play a crucial role in sustaining the delicate balance of our environment. The Aberdare ecosystem is home to an estimated 3,600 elephants, a population that has seen steady growth thanks to the concerted efforts of conservationists and local communities. This thriving population is a testament to the importance of preserving natural habitats and the continued dedication to protecting these gentle giants. However, the work is far from over. As human activities and infrastructure developments increasingly encroach on wildlife habitats, it’s more critical than ever to advocate for sustainable practices that ensure elephants and other wildlife can coexist harmoniously with human communities. At Aberdare Yetu, we are committed to safeguarding the Aberdares and ensuring that the elephants continue to roam freely across this beautiful landscape. By supporting the alternative Ndaragwa - Kariamu - Ndunyu Njeru road route, we aim to protect the critical wildlife corridors that are essential for the survival of these elephants. Let’s join forces this World Elephant Day to protect our elephants and the habitats they depend on. Together, we can secure a future where these magnificent beings continue to thrive in the wild. 🌿🐘 #WorldElephantDay #AberdareYetu #SaveTheAberdares #ElephantConservation #ProtectOurWildlife #SustainableDevelopment

Since 1997, Greenfleet has focused on restoring habitat for Australia’s native wildlife, including the fascinating Greater Gliders. These nocturnal marsupials thrive in the canopies of tall eucalypts, relying on young foliage high in nitrogen for food. However, their population is declining due to recent bushfires and extensive land clearing, prompting a national endangered status in 2022. These unique creatures are mostly solitary with relatively small home ranges, and have a high demand for tree hollows. Hollows develop very slowly as native forests grow, which is one of many reasons we protect our forests for up to 100 years. 🌳 Greenfleet has several projects already actively focusing on rebuilding these vital ecosystems. One of these projects is located in Kinglake, Victoria. To find out more, visit: https://lnkd.in/gPdWNkpT #GrowingHope #ClimateAction #GreaterGliders #NativeForests

World Rhino Day, celebrated annually on 22nd September, serves as a global platform to raise awareness about the conservation of the five rhino species: Black, White, Greater One-Horned, Sumatran, and Javan rhinos. The theme, "Keep the Five Alive," emphasizes the urgent need to protect these magnificent creatures and their habitats. Rhinos face severe threats from poaching for their horns and the destruction of their natural environments. Their survival is in jeopardy, and it's crucial that we unite to safeguard these incredible animals. Conserving rhinos requires a comprehensive approach that includes strengthening protection measures, actively involving local communities, and fostering greater public awareness. By working together and addressing these challenges, we can ensure a future where rhinos continue to thrive in their natural habitats. Let’s take action today to preserve these majestic species for generations to come. #WorldRhinoDay #WRD2024 #KeeptheFiveAlive International Rhino Foundation #newsfornature

Today is World Rainforest Day 🌿 On this important global day, we acknowledge the three distinct areas of #worldheritage listed rainforest in Australia, as defined by #UNESCO. The cool temperate rainforests of the Tasmanian Wilderness, the wet tropical rainforests of Queensland and the largely subtropical and warm temperate rainforests of the Gondwana Rainforests, which includes the Greater #BlueMountains Area. Did you know? 🌴 1% of the 1.03 million hectare Greater Blue Mountains Area is rainforest, descended from the ancient supercontinent of Gondwana. This includes the critically endangered Wollemi pine (Wollemia nobilis), endemic to the Blue Mountains and one of the world's oldest and rarest conifers. 🌳 Along with Basalt and Shale Cap Forests, Upland Peat Swamps, heathlands and over 100 species of Eucalypt, the rainforests of the Blue Mountains play an important role in the Area's #biodiversity. #WorldRainforestDay #forrainforests #nswnationalparks #BMCC #scenicworld #BlueMountainsTourism #Gundungurra #Dharug 📷 Grand Canyon Track, Blue Mountains National Park (NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service)
