Human activity is responsible for the loss of around half of the forests that once covered the Earth. It is well-known that peatland restoration has a positive impact on habitats, animals and insects, as ecosystems flourish amid the revitalized wetland. However, this #WorldAnimalDay 🦦 we are focusing on how we can be mindful of those species already inhabiting land prior to restoration. We work with a Protective Species Team to mitigate disturbances to animals during restoration work. For example, earlier this year, we identified a Black Grouse Lek Site during a project on Balnagown Estate. By involving relevant industry experts, we were able to develop a strategy which involved spatial buffer zones and working time restrictions to ensure that there was no disturbance to the Black Grouse or halt to the project. Small freshwater habitats can be overlooked, despite their importance to wildlife. Ponds, ditches, headwater streams & more support endangered species from Water Vole to Starfruit. It's time to prioritise these habitats as part of efforts to restore nature. National Parks are a powerful force for protecting nature and endangered species. In Scotland there is a great deal of work taking place to protect the last of our capercaillies and also to restore populations of freshwater pearl mussels (with the enormous benefit that they help clean water, which benefits many other species). They also do a great deal to restore threatened habitats such as our native wood and peatlands. These projects are only possible because of the funding that National Parks receive and the enormous additional funds they then leverage. The simple fact is that if there’s no new National Park in Galloway, South and East Ayrshire there will be no extra funding for nature.
