Young people in the UK are having to refuse jobs because they cannot afford associated costs such as clothes and transport. A worrying statistic from a recent article in the Guardian, following a study by the Princes Trust, highlights one of the real issues young people of today are facing. Studies like this one conducted by Fiverr also show 71% of 16-25 year olds say they are planning to, or already do, work as a freelancer and 36% state that their ultimate career goal is to be their own boss. Through our fully funded Enterprise programme 'Be The Boss' we are tackling such issues head on by empowering pupils in West Yorkshire Schools to consider self-employment as a viable option alongside other conventional opportunities. So far we have: - Attended 15 career fairs and engaged with approx. 7925 students. - Completed 2 x projects for SEN schools. - Hosted information sessions at 5 different school assembly’s. Click the link to read the full article, hear what's being said about the programme and to find out more. https://ow.ly/i2wx50RjPEc

Want to send out a weekly Careers newslettter but don’t have the time to make it? Let us do it! The Careers People produces a weekly newsletter that you can send out to students and parents, packed full of events, information and opportunities. It is a fabulous tool to pass on information in a professional and accessible format, that you don’t have to spend hours putting together each week. For any of my contacts working in the private school sector, we are now looking to launch a new careers newsletter specifically for you (details below). Please have a look at the info below and let us know if you would be interested or require more information. You can email on contact@thecareerspeople.co.uk #careersadvice #careers
NEW PRODUCT FOR PRIVATE SCHOOLS 👇 One of the pieces of feedback we have had from private, grammar and independent schools utilising our careers newsletter is that a lot of the opportunities are not relevant for their students as they’re aimed at young people who meet widening participation criteria. I have good news. From September, we will be running a specialist careers newsletter for private schools. The layout will be the same but the opportunities will not include events that your students cannot apply to and will include paid for events (consensus among the careers leads I have spoken to at private schools is that your parents will be ok with this). More information on our careers newsletter can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eNdDjhJw If you have questions or would like more information, please email me on contact@thecareerspeople.co.uk #privateeducation #careerseducation #careers

#Qualifications no longer centre stage when hiring first-time #Jobseekers! 📄 Aptitude is more important that a polished #CV for employers looking to take on first-time jobseekers, a survey from a West Midlands recruitment specialist has revealed. Nearly half (48 per cent) of respondents said aptitude was the most important "have" for new, young colleagues, with a polished CV coming second, taking 30 per cent of the vote. 👨🎓 #Education achievements came third, with 12 per cent, while 10 per cent of businesses said they looked for something else as a priority when considering first time hires. The survey was conducted by Meriden-based Pertemps Network Group to mark #NationalApprenticeshipWeek, run annually to celebrate the achievements of apprentices and the positive impact they make on organisations. ⭐Workshop Spotlight⭐ Today, I had the opportunity to attend a really insightful workshop hosted by the Uni Kent Careers at the University of Kent, hosted by the amazing Susannah Gilbert on the topic of Finding a Part-Time Job. Here are some key takeaways from the session: ⬇️ 💼 Understanding the Job Market: The seminar provided an in-depth look into the local job market, offering guidance on where to find part-time opportunities both on and off-campus. It was great to learn about resources tailored specifically for students. ✍️ Crafting Standout Applications: A significant portion of the seminar focused on perfecting job applications—writing compelling CVs and cover letters that align with what employers are looking for. I learned about the importance of tailoring applications to each job and highlighting relevant skills. 🎓 Making the Most of University Resources: The Careers & Employability Service at Kent offers a range of support services, from job boards to one-on-one guidance. I’m definitely planning to make use of these to boost my chances of landing a role that fits around my studies. 🌍 International Student Perspective: As an international student, I found it particularly helpful to learn about the legalities of working part-time in the UK, and the specific kinds of jobs available that align with my visa requirements. I’m incredibly grateful to be part of a university that prioritizes employability and offers these learning opportunities to students! Looking forward to putting this knowledge into action during my job search. 💪 #UniversityOfKent #CareersService #StudentSupport #Employability #InternationalStudent #PersonalGrowth

END OF WEEK RANT: The Telegraph article "At 18, I had no clue what career I wanted – this is what I wish I’d known" once again has no input from, or mention of, speaking to careers professionals at college or university. Instead the author shares their experience as if this is how things are now: "The careers office at Cambridge University was a cramped little room filled with dusty leaflets, located at the opposite end of town from my college. I’d trek down there and realise I had no idea where to begin." How to get support and advice? "There are also online courses to help school leavers and graduates apply for jobs and prepare for the world of work.... Friends, teachers and family know you better than any test. Explore your ideas by talking to them, and listen to their advice." None of this is wrong, but why wouldn't she advise speaking to qualified careers professionals who specialise in the areas that these people are looking to explore? What is most frustrating is that this writer has children who are going through this right now, and chairs "The Diversity Project" running online skills workshops. Why isn't the work of career development professionals, guidance practitioners and graduate transition coaches on her radar? Rant over, enjoy your weekends folks! https://archive.ph/DFBbG
