I see a worrying trend as I look through social media... While I do love the more realistic view of motherhood I am seeing, I am also noticing reels and videos where women are portraying serious mental health symptoms as if they are a normal part of motherhood. For example, I have seen normalising the desire to be in a car accident in order to avoid the stress of motherhood; this is escapism and should be a warning sign for the need for support! We absolutely need to be talking about the symptoms of maternal mental health challenges, but it can blur the line between the normal challenges of this period and when someone needs to seek support. That is why I am so committed to providing high-quality professional online trainings for perinatal professionals so they can feel confident in their ability to work effectively with parents and their families experiencing perinatal mental health issues. Let's get out there and support those moms! See comments for a link to the PMHI website for more information about upcoming trainings.

Did you know that up to 90% of new mothers experience intrusive thoughts at some point? These unwanted, often distressing thoughts can feel overwhelming, but having them doesn’t mean something is wrong with you. In fact, mild intrusive thoughts are a normal part of adjusting to parenthood. However, if these thoughts become persistent, cause significant distress, or interfere with your ability to function, it might indicate a perinatal mental health concern like postpartum anxiety or OCD. Seeking support from a professional can make all the difference in helping you understand and cope with these thoughts. At Phoenix Health, we provide compassionate, expert care for parents navigating the challenges of parenthood. Whether you’re dealing with intrusive thoughts, anxiety, or any signs of a perinatal mental health concern, we’re here to help. 💙You don’t have to navigate this alone. Perinatal Mental Health Week starts today, Sunday 17 November and continues until Saturday 23 November. Perinatal anxiety and depression is more common than you think, with up to 1 in 5 expecting and new mums affected. And with as many as 1 in 10 expecting or new dads affected too. Left untreated, it can be devastating, which is why this week is so important. The message this year: ‘Make the Call’, is a call to action for parents to take care of their mental health during these precious years. Whether you’re experiencing mental health challenges yourself, or if you’re concerned about a loved one, it’s important to reach out and talk about the way you’re feeling. It can be hard, and tricky to find the right words, but making that call when you need support is an important step of the journey. Is there someone you are worrying about in your team? Why aren't they using the EAP or other benefits? Often, parents don't reach out for support until they reach breaking point because they believe there is a big difference between "struggling" and "postnatal depression". They just don't realise therapy or other mental health support is meant for them. In this post I use a model of wellbeing to show that the distinction is simply unhelpful. Becoming pregnant or adding a child to your family naturally challenges mental wellbeing as we seek to adjust and adapt. I'm working with an organisation at the moment that has a fantastic EAP that less than 6% of people are making use of. This says everything. If more parents realised that their mental well-being matters now, before they reach crisis, we wouldn't see the frightening perinatal mental health statistics that dominate our newsfeeds. Please share with anyone who may be struggling and waiting for breaking point before they get help. Check out my blog post https://wix.to/0iOHF0H #newblogpost

Did you know that as many as 1 in 5 new mothers experience some type of perinatal mood and anxiety disorder (PMADs)? These illnesses frequently go unnoticed and untreated, often with tragic and long-term consequences to both mother and child. Estimates are that 7 in 10 women hide or downplay their symptoms. Culturally-responsive care and support can empower them to instead seek treatment to enhance their mental wellbeing. On this World Maternal Mental Health Day, we recognize the rewarding yet demanding journey of motherhood. With our Libbie app, we help moms to enhance their mental resilience to difficult situations and support them as they care for their loved ones. Invest in your mental wellbeing - your growing family will benefit. You deserve to feel supported.
