I see a worrying trend as I look through social media... While I do love the more realistic view of motherhood I am seeing, I am also noticing reels and videos where women are portraying serious mental health symptoms as if they are a normal part of motherhood. For example, I have seen normalising the desire to be in a car accident in order to avoid the stress of motherhood; this is escapism and should be a warning sign for the need for support! We absolutely need to be talking about the symptoms of maternal mental health challenges, but it can blur the line between the normal challenges of this period and when someone needs to seek support. That is why I am so committed to providing high-quality professional online trainings for perinatal professionals so they can feel confident in their ability to work effectively with parents and their families experiencing perinatal mental health issues. Let's get out there and support those moms! See comments for a link to the PMHI website for more information about upcoming trainings.

Does your business have enough awareness of Maternal Mental Health? As a champion for the Maternal Mental Health Alliance this topic is very close to my heart. Having children is the most amazing time of our lives, it's also one of the biggest changes to deal with and for many people returning to work and juggling being a new parent can be very difficult. What support does your business have for new parents? Did you know that 1 in 5 Mums will experience a maternal mental health problem Of which 70% will hide or underplay their difficulties. However, Dads can suffer too. In fact it's been reported that 1 in 10 men suffer from post natal depression. So when we are looking at the new pictures of baby why not ask how parents are doing too. Watch for signs of exhaustion, low energy, low mood and signs of disengagement. Reach out and offer some support. #maternalmentalhealth #newparents #workingparents

Did you know that as many as 1 in 5 new mothers experience some type of perinatal mood and anxiety disorder (PMADs)? These illnesses frequently go unnoticed and untreated, often with tragic and long-term consequences to both mother and child. Estimates are that 7 in 10 women hide or downplay their symptoms. Culturally-responsive care and support can empower them to instead seek treatment to enhance their mental wellbeing. On this World Maternal Mental Health Day, we recognize the rewarding yet demanding journey of motherhood. With our Libbie app, we help moms to enhance their mental resilience to difficult situations and support them as they care for their loved ones. Invest in your mental wellbeing - your growing family will benefit. You deserve to feel supported. The transition to parenthood is a time of intense emotional adjustment that is compounded by sleep disruptions, fatigue, and anxiety about caring for a baby. Perinatal mental health conditions can have a serious, long-lasting negative impact on the parent’s developing relationship with their baby and family. Identifying #postpartum mental health conditions and providing appropriate support and treatment is family-centred care. On #WorldMaternalMentalHealthDay, and as we approach #MentalHealthWeek, let’s focus on the mental health of pregnant individuals and new parents. Did you know being postpartum doesn't mean depression? The word postpartum simply refers to the time after giving birth, but it’s often misunderstood. Many think it automatically means depression or anxiety, but that’s not true. Not everyone who is postpartum has a mental health condition. It's important to know that this period can be full of physical and emotional changes, but it doesn’t always mean you’re struggling with postpartum depression. However, if you do start feeling low, anxious, or overwhelmed, it's okay to ask for help. Talking to a healthcare provider, getting support from loved ones, and practicing self-care can make a big difference. How do you take care of your mental health during the postpartum phase? Let me know in the comments below! #motherhood #parenting #depression #mentalhealth

#worldmentalhealthawarenessday I’ve been sitting here, thinking about what to say. I could show you the statistics on how much NICU parents struggle with their mental health, but we already know that. I considered talking about the often-overlooked conditions, like PTSD in parenthood, but we’ve had those conversations before. I even thought about sharing my own mental health struggles, but today isn’t about me, it’s about you. So, this is for anyone who’s in the trenches right now, anyone who has been, or anyone who can’t see a way forward. Mental health struggles after the NICU are so often overlooked, under-recognised. Too many of us are told we don’t meet the criteria for support, even though we know we need it. But here’s the truth: you deserve support. This can change. You don’t have to accept the label of being an “anxious parent” just because of how your journey started. Mental health issues after the NICU deserve to be seen, validated, and treated. NICU parents deserve to be heard. If you’ve ever been dismissed, if your struggles have ever been minimized, if you’re in the thick of it right now, wondering if this is just how it’s going to be. I want you to know you’re not alone. There are so many of us who feel it too. Your pain is real, and your struggle matters. You are important, not just because caring for your mental health helps you care for your baby, but because you matter. You deserve support for yourself, simply because you’re worth it. There’s support here. There’s understanding here. There’s community here. You don’t have to carry this alone. Find out more about how we can support you here https://lnkd.in/ew4TgBwc

This is such an important message. Intrusive thoughts can be so isolating, especially for new parents who may not realize how common they are. It's reassuring to know that support is available and that experiencing these thoughts doesn’t mean something is wrong with you. Thank you for shedding light on this topic!
