Nowadays, 2 out of 3 students in Europe graduate from universities that are part of European Universities Alliances. These Alliances improve higher education by filling gaps in skills and build the European workforce that society needs. They can do this in efficient ways, by grouping together universities’ expertise, resources, data, staff and resources. This makes Europe more competitive and more attractive worldwide. A large increase in budget for Alliances has recently been proposed. Encouraging speech by Vanessa Debiais-Sainton, DGEAC, European Commission at the Internationalisation of European Universities Alliances #EAIE side event here in Toulouse. #EuropeanUniversities

We are excited to share that #MSCAdvocacy recently visited Algeria to strengthen research mobility cooperation with the EU through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (#MSCA). The meeting, held at CERIST and hosted by the Algerian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, brought together various R&I stakeholders to explore opportunities provided by MSCA. The focus was on expanding MSCA opportunities in the country and identifying synergies for collaboration with other EU programmes. Representatives from EURAXESS Africa, #HorizonEurope Europe NCPs, Erasmus+, and COST Association - European Cooperation in Science and Technology participated in the discussion. University representatives from institutions such as Université des Sciences et Technologies Houari Boumediene, University of Oran 1 Ahmed Ben Bella, Université Frères Mentouri - Constantine 1, Kasdi Merbah University - Ouargla, Université Mohamed Khider de Biskra, Université Amar Thelidji Laghouat, Université Abderrahmane Mira - Béjaia, Université Mohamed Bougara Boumerdes, Université Setif 1, Ecole Nationale Polytechnique, were also present. It was highlighted that strategic promotion efforts are essential to engage top research organisations in Algeria that have not yet participated in MSCA. There was also a call for increased promotional activities to generate interest from the private sector, which is currently underrepresented among MSCA stakeholders in the country. Overall, the meeting was a step towards enhancing research mobility cooperation between Algeria and the EU through MSCA. We look forward to further collaborations and opportunities for researchers in Algeria to benefit from MSCA initiatives. #ResearchMobility 📸 EURAXESS Africa

The African context is marked by a low interest in research, States are often content to provide operating subsidies to universities. The African private sector is more specialized in import-export than in setting up production and/or processing industries likely to call on researchers. As a result, research centers and university research units are poorly funded. If an awareness campaign aimed at States and companies is necessary so that they are interested in financing research and development, in the short term researchers must invest in finding funding on an international scale and participate fully in the production of new ideas and innovative processes for global well-being and a sustainable world. To do this, African researchers must not only mobilize funding for their scientific work, but above all they must take part alongside researchers from diverse backgrounds and related disciplines in sharing research products. To this end, it is necessary for African researchers to participate in international conferences to discuss their papers and the papers of other researchers around the world. These two themes, in particular the search for and acquisition of international funding and the presentation of my work in international bodies, hold my attention because the first will allow me to access additional funding in my research projects while the second offers me an opportunity to popularize the results of my work and also be informed of the results obtained by other researchers in the world. Thus, the two themes and not without the other ten of entrepreneurial thinking, they will allow me to be an active researcher in various environments. For my thesis work, i received support for my doctoral thesis from the University of Ottawa in Canada. This includes the supervision of Professor ARY TANIMOUNE Nasser, but also the support of my stays outside Niger. Previously, i was a recipient of the Interuniversity Third Cycle Program PTCI scholarship (2012-2014) in Cotonou, Benin. Rgarding international conferences, i received an invitation to participate in the thematic doctoral seminars of the Luxembourg-Bamako Cooperation in November 2016, where we spent 10 days. MSCAdvocacy’s recent mission to China aimed to explore and understand the intricacies of research collaboration between Europe and China focusing on the potential increase in researcher and staff mobility flows under #MSCA. The mission led by Country Liaison Officer for China, Sara Medina, conducted in-depth interviews with a wide range of stakeholders who provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities associated with EU to China mobility flows. Interviewees included European researchers actively involved in projects in China, recipients of MSCA funding for research exchanges in Europe, representatives of Chinese research centres and universities able to host European researchers, as well as key stakeholders such as EURAXESS China, the Delegation of the European Union to China 欧盟驻华代表团, China Institute for Brain Research (CIBR) and the Sino-German Agricultural Centre (DCZ). The mission demonstrated the openness and commitment to cooperation between the two parties. The lessons learnt from the mission will help share future mobility initiatives under MSCA and promote stronger and broader collaboration between European and Chinese researchers and institutions.
