My Hostel Journey: Creativity in the Kitchen and the Start of Leadership In those early days, work became my anchor. By the 6th standard, I was part of the “BHOJAN SAMITI” a team dedicated to serving meals to fellow students, from breakfast to dinner, and even the snacks in between. But for me, it wasn’t just about the work. I saw an opportunity to add a personal touch, to express myself in small ways. No one asked me to, but I started designing the lunchboxes with creativity adding little details, and playing around with how the food was presented. It was my way of making something routine feel special. To my surprise, people noticed. My mentors saw the sincerity and enthusiasm I brought to every task. They appreciated the extra effort I put in, and my peers loved the touch of creativity. Beyond serving meals, I took on more responsibility. Some students weren’t coming to lunch regularly, and the hostel decided to track attendance. I stepped up to handle this, marking who showed up and personally visiting the rooms of those who didn’t. It became my job to encourage them to come for meals, ensuring no one missed out. This level of care and attention didn’t just boost my confidence it gave me a sense of purpose. For two years, I let my work speak for itself. I stayed calm and focused and poured my energy into making every meal something memorable. But then came the real test. After 7th standard, my mentors saw something in me they trusted me with a bigger role. They asked me to lead a team. I had never been in a leadership position before, and it felt like I was stepping into completely uncharted territory. I was nervous, unsure if I could rise to the challenge. Giving back to Penn State students with an endowed award is such a rewarding way to channel my philanthropy. Here’s a few reasons why… 1. It gives me to opportunity to connect with amazing students like Gabriela Mutone to support her college experience and give gratitude for what she has done for the THON and SHM community. 2. It puts my donations to work in an endowment that will continue to give in perpetuity, even after I’m gone. 3. Award criteria is customizable for the donor. I was honor my two largest Penn State passions, SHM and THON leadership. 4. $1,000 per quarter for 5 years is the commitment for an award level giving, with it being awarded once you fully fund it. This was a great way to channel my annual giving into one source. 5. Naming the gift brings awareness that allows me to connect with other potential donors and share why I decided to give this way. It also normalizes planned giving for all, removing the misconception that it requires decades of wealth and six figures gifts.
