Energy Saving Technologies in Decarbonising Shipping The shipping industry stands at a pivotal juncture, facing mounting pressure to slash carbon emissions while maintaining operational efficiency. Amidst this challenge, Energy Saving Technologies (ESTs) emerge as beacons of hope, offering pragmatic solutions to drive decarbonisation in maritime transportation. The urgency to curb emissions is undeniable. With greenhouse gas emissions from shipping projected to rise exponentially, the need for immediate action is apparent. ESTs present a multifaceted approach to mitigate environmental impact while enhancing operational performance. From wind-assisted propulsion systems to hull enhancements, the arsenal of ESTs is diverse and promising. The recent adoption of ambitious targets by the International Maritime Organization underscores the industry's commitment to reducing carbon intensity. However, the journey towards decarbonisation is riddled with obstacles, including cost constraints and vessel life cycle considerations. Retrofitting existing vessels with ESTs emerges as a viable solution, offering tangible benefits in both environmental and economic terms. Research underscores the potential of ESTs to significantly reduce emissions and operational costs. From wind propulsion technologies boasting up to 30% fuel savings to hull enhancements yielding double-digit emission reductions, the benefits are compelling. Moreover, successful case studies demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of these technologies in real-world applications. Yet, the road to decarbonisation is not without challenges. While ESTs offer a promising pathway, they alone cannot achieve full decarbonisation. The dominance of fossil-based fuels necessitates a holistic approach, including investment in alternative fuels and new vessel construction. As the maritime sector charts its course towards decarbonisation, embracing innovation and sustainability will be paramount. The adoption of ESTs represents a tangible step towards a greener and more resilient future. However, concerted efforts from industry stakeholders, policymakers, and innovators will be essential to overcome barriers and accelerate the transition to a low-carbon shipping industry. In navigating the future of shipping, ESTs shine as guiding lights, illuminating a pathway towards sustainable and prosperous seas. Together, let us embark on this journey towards a greener horizon, where innovation and sustainability converge to chart a course towards a brighter future for generations to come. 🌐 The shipping industry is responsible for 3% of global greenhouse gas emission. Around 90% of the world's goods are transported by sea. These number inspired the team behind the CHEK project to develop novel solutions for creating zero-emission vessels. They are using a combination of new vessel designs and technology retrofits for existing vessels, including the return of sails. Thanks to their effort, the first cargo ship with sails harnessing wind power to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions departed. Or better, sailed into the future! ⛵ Read more 👉 europa.eu/!k8hrT8 We asked project coordinator Suvi Karirinne how EU #research & #innovation supported their ground-breaking results. 👇 #ResearchImpactEU
