Game Economist at Game Economist Consulting

This is a top-ten DoF episode. Pete Hawley and Alexander Seropian are insanely fun together, and Michail Katkoff touches on all the burning questions. - Monetization is even worse than I thought—you literally get a check at the end of the month. It's a complete black box. UEFN is behind. We know Roblox's development took ten years to explode, but Epic needs to nail its roadmap, and things are already slipping. This episode contextualizes Epic's MASSIVE hiring and global expansion in the last five to ten years. Tim Sweeney knew he needed more engineers and capital to accomplish this. - Alexander Seropian's observation that core Fortnite will be built in UEFN is a fantastic catch. Epic is eating its own dog food, and it's all on this bet. - The most troubling aspect is that Fortnite is not growing. It had some of its worst engagement numbers in a year last month. If it doesn't grow, it will all crumble much less than build up. Developers are developing with the expectation of growth.

It’s pretty wild to hear that feature like “save game/progress” were still missing at the time when this interview was recorded. Building for UEFN is being a true pioneer in all the good and not so good.
