We successfully convened the Kenya Plastic Pact (KPP) explorative strategic hybrid meeting for 2025, bringing together all KPP members along with our strategic partner, WRAP, represented by Talya Shalev, International Partnerships Manager. This collaborative discussion aimed to review the accomplishments of 2024 and to establish a strategic plan for the upcoming year. The Kenya Plastic Pact comprises a diverse array of organizations from throughout the plastics value chain, united in their efforts to tackle the systemic challenges of plastic waste management and pollution. We sincerely appreciate the commitment of our members and supporters over the years in working toward the four KPP 2030 roadmap targets: 1. Eliminating unnecessary or problematic single-use plastic packaging items through redesign, innovation, and reusable delivery models. 2. Ensuring 100% of plastic packaging is reusable or recyclable. 3. Achieving a 40% effective recycling rate for plastic packaging. 4. On Friday, 29th November 2024, HACO Industries had the privilege of visiting Mr. Green Trading Africa Kenya Ltd., along Mombasa Road - a key player in transforming Kenya’s plastic waste into economic and social value. This impactful visit began at the Pre-Processing Hub (PPH), where waste collectors from across the country deliver plastic waste for sorting by colour and type. The segregated material is then baled and transported to the recycling facility for washing, crushing, and pelletizing. The resulting recycled pellets provide sustainable raw materials for businesses, enabling the production of eco-conscious products. Engaging with Country CEO Sonia Orwa, we delved into the remarkable impact of Mr. Green’s operations, learning about their support for a network of over 9,000 waste pickers through their social plastics model. This initiative not only empowers livelihoods but also protects the environment, exemplifying a holistic approach to sustainability. We also had the opportunity to meet the co-founders, Karim Debabe and Keiran Smith, whose visionary leadership has positioned Mr. Green as a driving force against Kenya’s plastic waste crisis. Their mission aligns with the Chasing Zero Initiative at HACO, as we remain steadfast in our goal to achieve a zero-waste ecosystem. Our visit culminated in a collaborative roundtable discussion to finalize a transformative partnership. HACO is set to implement a post-consumer take-back scheme, ensuring that all packaging waste from our products at the consumer level is recovered and recycled. Recycled plastics will then be integrated into our detergent packaging, with ratios of up to 100%. This initiative not only advances the goals of Kenya’s Sustainable Waste Management (Extended Producer Responsibility) Regulations 2024 but also exemplifies our commitment to a circular economy. Our competitive edge in the region has enabled us eclipse our weekly recycling targets, from 15-April-2024 to 20-April-2024 we were able to recycle 50 Tonnes of PET Plastic. We also met with some of our suppliers and discussed the following; 1. Increasing prices to accommodate more waste pickers on their sites. 2. Plastic Waste Regulations and compliance trainings to our suppliers who transport the plastic waste to the factory 3. Despite #Kenya's significant strides in recent years, such as the ban on plastic bags and single-use plastics, the country continues to grapple with the menace of plastic pollution. This pressing issue is notably pronounced along the coast, posing a grave threat to the environment and the fragile marine ecosystems. Watamu Marine Association (WMA) and EcoWorld Recycling—Kenya’s frontrunners in sustainable waste management—have pioneered a proven model for plastic waste disposal, collection, segregation, and processing. Through this activity, USAID is partnering with WMA to scale their plastic collection supply chains and advance a circular economy waste management model across Kenya’s coast. The activity will build up and expand plastics collection and recycling operations in three coastal counties (Kwale, Kilifi, Mombasa); develop partnerships and a client base to boost the value of WMA’s plastic; and form a Public Limited Company to expand WMA’s business and attract international trade. In a groundbreaking initiative, four hundred and sixty women onboarded from 10 of the communities in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory have earned N4,221,660 by recycling plastic waste under the Reducing Marine Plastic Pollution through Recycling project aimed at reducing plastic pollution in Wupa and Usuma rivers in Lugbe and Gwagwalada areas of the territory. The communities: Chika, Aleyita, Pyakasa, Piwoyi, Karonmajigi, Gwako, New Kutunku, Tunga-Maje, Angwan-Gabas and Lugbe. The goal of the project is to reduce marine plastic pollution across the country through recycling by getting community participation in the source segregation and recovery of plastic waste and other recyclable materials and ensuring their reincorporation into the value chain system. It aims also to promote behavioural change and empower members of the host communities through job creation and capacity-building programs. Hello everyone. During the past week, I have been educated and empowered by astonished speakers from around the world about the effects of plastics on our environment. The BreakFreeFromPlastics(BFFP) Youth Summit 24 was an event that made my commitment to help make the environment a better place for future generations. The constant pollution in parts of Ghana from urban cities, slums and other settlements has made various alterations to our environment through floods,extreme heat levels,clean water, and the like. This situation needs to change in the shortest possible time. Plastics have been part of us for a long time but the improper disposal of plastics has caused serious havoc to various water species and indiscriminate littering to our environment. The #PlasticsTreaty is the right step for Ghana 🇬🇭 to sign up to make a global commitment to reduce plastics use. I urge all citizens to help reduce plastic waste by taking alternatives to educate the general public on the effects of plastic pollution on our environment. Alternatives to plastics include; ✅The use of reusable and recyclable bags for domestic and commercial purposes. Reusable and recyclable bags are effective ways of reducing plastics. For instance, the use of tote bags is necessary to reduce plastics in the major cities in Ghana especially Accra. ✅The use of various ancient ways for packaging food. In Ghana ancient ways of packaging various staples are necessary to reducing plastics waste. The use of corn husks, broad banana leaves are used by some communities for packaging staples in Ghana. In Ghana, a normal way to package is to use plastics from spoon, Polyethene bags, plastic packs and rubber bangs. Various staples such as Wakey , kenkey and other foods can be packaged with organic and natural alternatives. Policy makers should be concerned about this and other environmental threats. Transparency is key to our Business, that is why we share accurate information of the plastic recycled at Dawn to Glow International limited. Due to numerous challenges such as unstable International markets and political tensions in the month of June, we recorded one of the lowest records at the factory. We only recycled 130 Tonnes of plastic waste.
