Love this, as I recently came across the tealsrevealed.com website which presented "Facts about Teals" as follows: (% voted with) Total Votes Votes on Legislation GRN ALP LIB GRN ALP LIB Kate Chaney MP 68% 65% 43% 73% 76% 20% My curious mind wondered about the validity* of these facts - because facts they are (as referenced on the site). Upon initial reading my interpretation was the Teals** were biased in their voting towards the Greens and ALP and biased away from the Liberals. The website claims they "vote most often with the Greens" and "only stand against the Liberals & Nationals". But the difference in the Liberals % between total votes and votes on legislation made me wonder.... If this was total votes, then it can be influenced by the quantum of items to be voted upon and their makeup. The Liberals and the ALP often - not always - vote opposite to one another and if the ALP was putting forward more items to be voted upon the Total Votes % could be skewed. A more valid test of any bias in voting alliances between the "teals" and any other party would be to measure the percentage of time they voted with the party proposing the legislation, and - voila! - Kate Chaney MP has done the math for me! Any difference among the parties is statistically insignificant. In fact, Kate Chaney MP has supported most often legislation proposed by the ALP, but not in any statistically significant way. In her words, "I vote fairly evenly with all the parties, which explains why I don't fit into any party." Insight: critically evaluate "facts" as they are presented to you. - is the source reliable and independent? - if there is analysis, are the interpretations valid*? - is the information verifiable through other means? PS: At the bottom of the tealsrevealed.com website is a political acknowledgment: "Authorised by A. Hirst, Liberal, Canberra" * by validity I mean (in the statistical sense) whether the test measures what it aims to measure ** the website groups eight Independent MPs together under a single brand, allowing readers to interpret them as akin to the ALP or the Liberals or the Greens despite the fact they are specifically independent of any particular party
People often ask me which party I vote with – I get accused of being a stooge of various different parties by different people! As an Independent, I decide on each vote on its merits and the values of my community, not based on how anyone tells me to vote. As it happens, I vote fairly evenly with all the parties, which explains why I don’t fit into any party. This data is sourced from the Federal Parliamentary Library as at 15 October 2024. Voting figures are regularly updated on my website. #AusPol #CurtinIndependent #KateChaney #CurtinElectorate #AustralianPolitics #VotingRecord
