But even more crucial in these times are empathy and a solid foundation of values. I’m reminded of a story from a physics class: A teacher asked, “Does cold exist?” A student replied, “Cold doesn’t exist. It’s simply the absence of warmth. Likewise, darkness is the absence of light.” The student then asked, “Does hatred exist?” The answer: “Hatred is just the absence of love and empathy. Just as cold arises when warmth is missing, hatred arises when leadership lacks heart and values.” This metaphor is more relevant than ever. Leaders today must not only make clear decisions but also embody values and humanity. Clear direction is vital, but without empathy and a strong moral compass, “darkness” emerges — a space where conflict and division thrive. In times of uncertainty and global challenges, we need leaders who not only chart a course but also ignite the light of values and the warmth of empathy. These qualities are what build trust, unite teams, and lead to lasting success. Clarity in leadership is essential. But it is empathy and values that ultimately make the lasting difference — in business, in society, and in the world.

They don’t account for the messy, real-world decisions leaders face every day. Enter *Prospect Theory*—a game-changer developed by Nobel Laureates Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky. This theory explains why leaders aren’t always acting on strict logic. Emotions and biases drive us all, even leaders. Here’s why it matters: 📉 Loss Aversion: Leaders feel losses more than gains. A CEO might take risks to avoid a loss rather than pursuing a gain. Think of someone doubling down on a struggling division to avoid a loss instead of focusing on growth. 🎯 Reference Points: Decisions are often anchored to performance targets. If last quarter’s goal was missed, a manager may take bigger risks to “make up for it.” Hit the goal? Adaptive leadership brings out agility of the mind, innovation, resilience, anticipatory foresight, that is required in chaos, ambiguities and complexities. Having encountered Professor Dean Williams in November at SIM 60 anniversary whose focus study is in adaptive leadership, brings me to a different level of thinking. I was inspired to learn deeper into adaptive leadership and what it means in a complex world of leadership. It would have been wasted to sit through the valuable insightful session and not deep dive to uncover a new understanding and its deep wealth of insight. Made a commitment to keep the learnings alive by further reading up the book Professor Dean Williams authored “Leadership for a fractured world: How to cross Boundaries, Build Bridges, and Lead Change.” “Leaders today must be agents of change who are willing and able to cross boundaries, connect groups, and orchestrate multidimensional problem solving and change. Without that kind of leadership, the fractures that separate us will only get worse.” “Professor Dean William was a faculty member at Harvard University’s Kennedy School for two decades, based at the Center for Public Leadership. At Harvard’s Center for Public Leadership, he was responsible for the World Leaders Project – a research initiative that drew lessons and insights on leadership from prime ministers, presidents, and CEOs.
