Make a difference on #GivingTuesday by donating to fund New Buildings Institute’s (NBI) crucial work to advance building research, code and policy, and market development. With your help, we can keep pushing toward our vision of a built environment that equitably delivers community benefits and climate solutions. Our research, insights, and guidance has helped key sectors to maximize the impact of their work through projects such as: Schools: NBI’s K-12 Schools team is a nationally recognized technical assistance provider for school districts that want to create healthy learning environments, reduce energy costs, and gain access to national, state, and local incentives for school building updates. Our work on two national efforts (the Department of Energy’s Efficient and Healthy Schools Program and the Energy CLASS Prize) has already mobilized help for more than 10,000 schools, serving 5.4 million students. Our work to support districts will continue in 2025. Museums and the cultural sector: In collaboration with Environment and Culture Partners, NBI has two significant efforts ramping up in 2025 to support cultural institutions. The projects will build on our initial Culture Over Carbon research, helping arts and culture organizations make substantial energy and carbon reductions to create more energy-efficient and resilient spaces for communities. City and State Policy: As part of our work on urban heat mitigation, NBI published the Urban Heat Island Code Overlay in 2024, providing cities and states with language to address extreme heat through their codes and policies. Hundreds of city and state policymakers have leveraged the Overlay text; NBI is working now to ensure we can help them adapt and adopt the code language to fit the needs of each jurisdiction. The climate crisis makes the need for NBI’s work more critical than ever. Please consider supporting this vital work with a personal donation this year. Fantastic interactive map (plus other tools and resources) highlighting what is being funded where, by whom, and where the needs (and gaps) are
🌍 In 2023, a coalition of UK-based funders came together to discuss how to deliver more #collaborative, #impactful #PlaceBased funding. This convening led to the development of our Place-Based Interactive Map and Insights Report! These tools help to inform funding decisions through analysing the distribution of projects and funds across the UK, and have the ability to connect those working towards place-based change. Through this map, we’ve highlighted 114 projects that address social and economic challenges through place-based, collaborative approaches. Supported by £62 million in funding, the map not only highlights many fantastic initiatives, but also raises awareness around areas needing greater support. 𝐘𝐂𝐅𝟑 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲💡 The Youth Challenge Fund is not only about funding youth organisations' projects, but also about building their capacity to better structure and manage their organisations. For this reason, the grantees of #ycf3 were trained in the management of their organisation's communication and visibility. A training that provided them with the necessary elements to sell their potential, to tell what they are doing, how they are transforming their communities and to attract support and partnerships. At the end of the day, the grantees agreed to build and strengthen their communication and to communicate what they are doing.

📽️A new film Heyday UK shines a light on how the #YouthInvestmentFund is creating new learning pathways and enabling more young people in Lincoln to access training skills for life and work. A grant from the Youth Investment Fund and support from other generous funders has enabled Lincoln City Foundation to open a brand-new youth facility and extend its reach, so more young people have new opportunities. The funding has created so much space, and it’s a real game-changer for Lincoln City Foundation. The enhanced facility provides much more space for learning in an inspirational setting. In the film you will meet the youth team and some of the young people who are thriving in their new youth space. The youth team say that the fund has helped them to support more young people and through their learning programmes helping them to progress to volunteering and paid employment. Along with learning, young people love the new opportunities to have fun with their friends, talk with a trusted youth worker and express their feelings.

My colleagues at Youth Endowment Fund have just published a data report that looks 'beyond the headlines'. It gives a clear account on whether violence affecting young people is improving or worsening across England and Wales. We work across a range of sectors and in education we know that children who are persistently absent from school without an authorised reason are more likely to commit serious violent offences. The data shows that this is an area where there is significant work to be done: 〰 In 2022/23, 21% of children in England’s schools were persistently absent, equating to 1.6 million pupils, or one in five. 〰 This is up from 11% pre-Covid-19 (2018/19) and 14% a decade ago (2012/13). 〰 Although down from 23% in the previous year (2021/22) due to fewer authorised absences (e.g., sickness), unauthorised absences and the number of pupils severely absent (missing 50% or more of sessions) continued to rise. 〰 Wales shows a similar trend. 🌟 Hopes for the Next 10 Years Collectively, we need to do more to improve attendance and outcomes. Addressing root causes, building positive relationships and providing targeted support can help children to stay engaged or re-engage with education. It's also crucial to look beyond the school gates and collaborate across sectors and in local communities to make a significant, positive, and lasting difference for children. 📄 Download the Full Report For more detailed insights, download our comprehensive report. The Youth Endowment Fund's new report – Education, Children and Violence – explores the essential role sport and physical activity can play in tackling the challenges that today’s children and young people face, including being involved in violence. It is saddening – albeit sadly, perhaps not surprising – to see one-in-five children said they missed school last year due to feeling unsafe, and that 15% of teachers reported that a child had brought a weapon into school. Urgent action is needed to lead this and future generations away from violence and we echo the YEF’s conclusion that sport has a vital role to play. City Funds is a place-based impact fund that uses its funds and aligned grants to strengthen organisations solving some of the biggest problems facing Bristol. Aligned with the One City Plan, City Funds adopts a One City approach bringing together the public and private sectors, mixing investment, grant-funding and pro bono support to make Bristol a fair, healthy and sustainable city. The fund, which was established five years ago as a collaboration of Quartet Community Foundation, Bristol & Bath Regional Capital and Bristol City Council, has been evaluated by The Good Economy. This evaluation looked at the successes of the fund and what can be learned from the process of setting it up. It found that City Funds has a unique governance structure that bridges the local authority and private investment to tackle inequality and city-wide issues. The final report includes an evaluation of the impact in terms of tackling inequality and what lessons can be brought forward to new funds, with a focus on the scalability of the fund, particularly in the context of the new Western Net Zero Accelerator Fund that Bristol & Bath Regional Capital is working on establishing and how the model can be transformed for a regional scale.
