https://lnkd.in/gyVJuJj3 As we look to International Women's Day today, it is crucial that we lament the violence suffered by the women and girls of Palestine. In my latest article, I urge the United Nations to address this issue as part of the International Women's Day agenda. Published today in Malaysiakini.

February 2024 UNAMA Report on the Status of Afghan Women. This report provides insights into the viewpoints of women from all corners of Afghanistan regarding their present circumstances and concerns. Following the Taliban's assumption of power in August 2021, referred to in this document as the de facto authorities or DFA, more than 50 decrees have been implemented, all of which directly undermine the rights and dignity of women. Notably, none of these decrees have been rescinded. The Taliban's vision for Afghanistan fundamentally disregards women's rights, well-being, and inherent worth, forming a framework that systematically denies their rightful place in society. #refugeerights #humanityfirst #afghanwomen #un #taliban https://lnkd.in/gkfQDHsV

Today, on International Women’s Day, we join together to celebrate the remarkable achievements of women across the globe. From groundbreaking scientific discoveries to transformative leadership and social justice movements, women continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible, breaking glass ceilings and forging paths for future generations 🚀 However, as we applaud these incredible accomplishments, it’s crucial that we do not overlook the profound struggles that many women still face. In places like Palestine 🇵🇸 , the Congo 🇨🇩, women are enduring unimaginable hardships. They face violence, oppression, and discrimination and yet we remain silent 🤫 The dichotomy between celebration and suffering serves as a powerful reminder of the work that remains to be done. It underscores the importance of our collective action and solidarity to uplift all women, especially those in the most vulnerable situations. Let’s use our voices, our platforms, and our actions to advocate for the rights and dignity of every woman and girl, irrespective of where they are born or the circumstances they face. As we honor the achievements, let’s also amplify the voices of those who are struggling. Together, we can create a world where every woman and girl can live free from fear, violence, and discrimination, and have the opportunity to fulfill their potential 💚 #InternationalWomensDay #Ceasefirenow #Solidarity

#IWD2024: National Democratic Institute (NDI) recently supported #Kyrgyzstan’s cross-party caucus of women parliamentarians, the Forum of Women MPs, to organize a national conference in Bishkek entitled “Biz bigrebiz” (“We are together”) to discuss Violence Against Women (VAW) and women’s economic empowerment. 100 women local councilors, civic activists, government representatives and women business leaders from across the country participated in the event, which resulted in a statement calling for enhanced institutional mechanisms, better monitoring of law enforcement, and improved policy coordination in combating VAW. The Forum members also pledged to continue driving ongoing parliamentary efforts to bring the local concerns of women onto the national level agenda and encouraging their male counterparts to join. By actively engaging diverse perspectives and stakeholders in constructive dialogue around the key needs of local women and girls, the Forum demonstrated a commitment to more inclusive and citizen centric policymaking. NDI looks forward to continuing supporting the Forum and women’s rights in #Kyrgyzstan by leveraging its technical expertise in responsive governance practices. USAID

We are deeply concerned about the absence of Afghan women in the third UN-led conference on Afghanistan taking place in Doha, Qatar on June 30, 2024. It is reported that the Taliban demanded that no Afghan women be allowed to participate in the meeting and that the agenda does not include women’s rights. The UN appears to have obliged these conditions, with the Taliban agreeing to participate as a result. CW4WAfghan supports the calls of other organizations and advocates to have Afghan women at the table. Their voices, experiences and concerns should be part of any high-level discussions on Afghanistan, and it should be acknowledged that there are no solutions to Afghanistan’s considerable challenges that do not include the full restoration of the rights of women and girls. 🌏 Proud to share that I contributed as part of the team at Global Network of Women Peacebuilders (GNWP) in developing the Women Build Peace: Southeast Asia Training of Trainers Workshop on Women, Peace and Security Facilitator’s Guide! 🌏 This guide is more than just a toolkit; it’s a strategic resource built to inspire action and deepen understanding. Created with the support of UN Women Asia and the Pacific, Mission of Canada to ASEAN | La mission du Canada auprès de l'ANASE, Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office Asia Pacific, and the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, Republic of Korea, and partners, it focuses on empowering communities and civil society leaders across Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam to implement the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda. Through this initiative, we aim to create practical pathways for integrating gender equality and peacebuilding into local contexts, grounding the WPS agenda in real-world scenarios and local challenges. We’re tackling questions like: 1. How can gender equality transform peace processes in conflict-prone areas? 2. What role do local communities play in making lasting change possible? Our hope is to see this guide spark conversations, mobilize new ideas, and strengthen the role of women in peace and security. As these concepts come to life, they bring us closer to a future where peace is more inclusive, sustainable, and reflective of every community’s unique strengths. This is a step forward not only for women’s empowerment but for resilient, gender-responsive peace efforts across SEA. #WomenBuildPeace #WPS #GenderEquality #PeaceAndSecurity #EmpowerCommunities

I can't come to find the "happy" in International Women's Day today. Our feminist movement can not be centred only around upper-class, upper caste, cis-het and abled-bodied women. In Palestine, more than 9,000 women have been brutally killed since October, 63 per day. Their struggles extend beyond the lack of menstrual hygiene products, resorting to period-delaying pills or makeshift alternatives like rags and scrapes of tents. They are giving birth without anesthesia, as they are forcefully starved and dehydrated, and losing their children no matter how hard they clutch them close. As we acknowledge the historical contributions of black women to universal suffrage and freedom, it is disheartening to witness their continued suffering in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sudan, facing sexual assault and violence. The under-representation of Dalit women in all sectors, coupled with a morality rate 14 years younger than upper-class women, underscores the urgent need for inclusivity. Indigenous and Aboriginal women face higher rates of systemic discrimination and violence, which is still overlooked despite decades of struggle and reparations. Disturbingly, 94% of fatal violence against trans individuals on Turtle Island targets trans women, highlighting how our rights do not include our trans sisters. As we acknowledge the oppression faced by women in Kashmir, Sudan, Palestine, Congo, Iran, Afghanistan, and all working-class women, it's crucial to recognize that true liberation transcends tokenism. No woman is truly free until every woman is liberated from the shackles of imperialism, and diversity should extend beyond representation, fostering an inclusive environment where every woman's voice is heard and valued. Today, let's reflect on the disparities and commit to a more equitable and empowering future for women worldwide. #InternationalWomensDay #IntersectionalFeminism

This week, we spotlight the pivotal role Ethiopian women play in shaping #TransitionalJustice and peace within their communities. At #MillenniumPartners, we've witnessed firsthand the effectiveness of including women at every step of the process. In collaboration with the Ethiopian justice system and civil society organizations, our initiatives under the USAID Feteh (Justice) Activity have prioritized the inclusion of women from diverse backgrounds— including victims and survivors — as every voice is essential to forging a path toward lasting peace. Transitional justice is not only about addressing past grievances; it is about preventing future conflicts by tackling root causes. Through our work, Millennium has helped to build systems that empower women to become agents of change, addressing issues like gender-based violence and discrimination head-on. We have been especially inspired by the Ethiopian Mediation and Arbitration Center (EMAC)’s training of 112 female judges in family mediation. By equipping these women with the skills to navigate conflict resolution, we're better able to ensure fair outcomes for all, especially for those who have been victims of abuse or traditionally excluded. In communities like Awra Amba, for example, women are leading in resolving conflicts and upholding peace. Their tireless efforts remind us that inclusivity and gender equality are fundamental to building a just society. Giving women a seat at the table, not only ensures their rights are protected but also paves the way for a more equitable and peaceful future for all Ethiopians. #InternationalWomensDay #Peacebuilding #EmpowerWomen #Ethiopia
