The tragic experience of Mrs. Kechine during the birth of her baby sheds light on the critical implications of unreliable electricity in Ethiopian healthcare facilities. Her ordeal at the local health center, encountering complications during a nighttime delivery, forced her on a frantic journey to a hospital with a stable power supply. Regrettably, she lost her newborn, a heart-wrenching event that emphasizes the pressing necessity for dependable electricity in healthcare environments. Sadly, Mrs. Kechine's narrative is not an isolated incident. With a substantial 65% of health facilities in Ethiopia grappling with unpredictable power, and over 40% lacking any access to electricity, the country faces a maternal mortality rate of 401 deaths per 100,000 live births and an under-five mortality rate of 59 deaths per 1,000 live births. Mrs. Kechine's touching words encapsulate the anguish and fear many mothers endure due to insufficient power supply in healthcare settings. "I was terrified giving birth in the dark. I worried for myself and my baby. The nurses did their best, but my baby died during my hours-long journey to another hospital... I still think about my baby to this day." Mrs. Kechine's story underscores the critical need for sustainable solutions in healthcare electrification. Collaborating and supporting health electrification initiatives is crucial in preventing such tragedies and ensuring safe and reliable healthcare for all.
