The tragic experience of Mrs. Kechine during the birth of her baby sheds light on the critical implications of unreliable electricity in Ethiopian healthcare facilities. Her ordeal at the local health center, encountering complications during a nighttime delivery, forced her on a frantic journey to a hospital with a stable power supply. Regrettably, she lost her newborn, a heart-wrenching event that emphasizes the pressing necessity for dependable electricity in healthcare environments. Sadly, Mrs. Kechine's narrative is not an isolated incident. With a substantial 65% of health facilities in Ethiopia grappling with unpredictable power, and over 40% lacking any access to electricity, the country faces a maternal mortality rate of 401 deaths per 100,000 live births and an under-five mortality rate of 59 deaths per 1,000 live births. Mrs. Kechine's touching words encapsulate the anguish and fear many mothers endure due to insufficient power supply in healthcare settings. "I was terrified giving birth in the dark. I worried for myself and my baby. The nurses did their best, but my baby died during my hours-long journey to another hospital... I still think about my baby to this day." Mrs. Kechine's story underscores the critical need for sustainable solutions in healthcare electrification. Collaborating and supporting health electrification initiatives is crucial in preventing such tragedies and ensuring safe and reliable healthcare for all. 𝐋𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐲𝐞𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐨𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐫, 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞-𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬! I had the opportunity to attend a Kenya Medical Association webinar on 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧!, where we explored how #healthcareprofessionals can tackle the devastating impacts of #HouseholdAirPollution (HAP) within #climateresilient health systems. Key statistics from the 𝘎𝘭𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘭 𝘉𝘶𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦 (𝘎𝘉𝘋) 2021 𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵 show the staggering impact of HAP: 𝟑.𝟏 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐬 𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐇𝐀𝐏 𝟕𝟒𝟏,𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝟐𝟔,𝟐𝟕𝟐 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐲𝐚 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞 Prof. Daniel Pope, started us off by highlighting that globally, #3billion people rely on #pollutingsolidfuels (like wood and charcoal) or kerosene for #cooking and #heating. The exposure to these fuels contributes to #respiratorydiseases, #cardiovascular issues, #pneumonia in children under 5, and #adversepregnancyoutcomes, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Shockingly, #HAP accounts for more than 680,000 premature deaths annually in the region, #surpassing mortality from #malaria and #HIV/AIDS combined. He shed light on how CLEAN-Air(Africa) is actively addressing this critical public health issue by: 1.Informing national policies to promote access to and adoption of 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲. 2.Demonstrating the #positivehealthandclimate impacts from transitioning to clean fuels. 3.#Strengthening health systems through community-led prevention strategies, with the support #CHWs. Lolem Lokolile Bosco picked up the conversation and provided insightful perspectives on #Kenya’s policies for #householdairpollution (HAP) and #climateresilienthealth, particularly the role of the 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐀𝐢𝐫 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲. #Aligning with the 𝐖𝐇𝐎 𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬, these #frameworks pave the way for healthy energy transitions, focusing on #reducing the #diseaseburden, #enhancinggovernance, and #ensuring effective #monitoring and #evaluation. A huge applause to Dr. Beatrice Muhu for leading this important conversation and to the entire Kenya Medical Association leadership for being at the forefront of addressing #health in #climateaction! As we strive toward achieving #SDG7,ensuring #affordable, #reliable, #sustainable, and #modernenergy for all, it's clear that addressing household #airpollution is not just a #healthissue but a critical component of #climateaction. We join the rest of the world in commemorating the World Health Day under the theme "My Health, My Right". Access to quality health services remains key to the provision of health rights in all Healthcare Facilities. One area that we are reflecting on, is the rise of infections acquired in #HealthcareFacilities which has costed Malawi millions of dollars every year, leading to thousands of preventable deaths. We continue to urge stakeholders in the #Water, #Sanitation and #Hygiene sector to join in the provision of quality health services and target the reduction of these infections by providing #cleanwater, #decentsanitation and #goodhygiene in our #HealthcareFacilities. #WorldHealthDay2024 #MyHealthMyRight
