When it comes LGBTQ+ allyship, the data paints a clear picture. Consumers expect business leaders to step up, mean what they say, and fight for the lives and livelihoods of LGBTQ+ people. The majority of people who are LGBTQ+ have faced discrimination at the workplace, and 1 in 5 choose not to report it. Research by EduBirdie has found that “70% of LGBTQ+ people feel lonely, misunderstood, marginalized, or excluded at work and 59% believe their sexual orientation or gender identity has hindered their careers”. Last week, our LGBTQ+ network hosted a panel event on the topic of being LGBTQ+ in the workplace. Colleagues on the panel shared their experience of coming out at work and answered questions from colleagues including ‘How does it feel when you are forced to come out or when someone outs you?’ At Shaw Trust, we celebrate inclusivity and aim to create a work environment where people can be themselves. Our colleague networks, including our LGBTQ+ network, and our network events offer continuous education, a safe space for colleagues, and opportunities for colleagues across the organisation to connect. Our colleagues self-report on diversity information: 0.3% of our colleagues identify as non-binary 2.9% of colleagues identify as gay or lesbian 2.4% of colleagues identify as bisexual Colleagues attending the event shared the following feedback: “Thank you so much to the panel for generously sharing their thoughts and experiences, I love being part of this [LGBTQ+] network”. “As an ally, I am really grateful to have had the opportunity to listen and hear people's experiences.” “These meetings never fail to make me grateful to work somewhere where I feel safe to be myself.” #PRIDE #PRIDEMonth #LGBTQ #Inclusion #Diversity #Work #Employment #Ally

🌈 Do you know who the top 10 European countries are for LGBTQ+ people? Over the past 11 years, ILGA-Europe’s Rainbow Europe Index has been a crucial barometer of LGBTQ+ rights across the continent. A decade ago, the UK was a trailblazer, proudly holding the number one spot, leading the charge for inclusivity and equality. However, as you can see the UK has dropped completely from the top 10, with Malta holding the top position in recent years. This shift reminds us that legal, societal, and cultural change can happen quickly - unfortunately, both ways. With determination and collective effort, we can create inclusive and supportive environments for all. But it also serves as a stark reminder that progress is fragile. The UK’s slip in the rankings illustrates how swiftly gains can be lost if we become complacent. Now, more than ever, we need to come together, protect our hard-won rights, and ensure that inclusivity and acceptance continue to thrive. Let us be inspired by the progress in Malta and beyond. Here’s a reminder of some action Leaders can take to support LGBTQ+ colleagues: 🌈 Sponsorship and Reverse Mentoring Career progression often hinges on sponsorship. Unfortunately, LGBTQ+ employees, especially trans individuals, are less likely to have sponsors/mentors. So seek out high-potential LGBTQ+ talent and leverage your influence to support their success. In turn, you will gain fresh perspectives and grow knowledge about challenges facing LGBTQ+ colleagues. 🌈 Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) Set up or join your company's LGBTQ+ ERG and see how you can help. Whether as an Executive Sponsor or an active ally, your involvement can drive meaningful change and provide a safe space for important discussions and celebrations. 🌈 Reflecting on the past 11 years, I’ve been inspired by ILGA-Europe’s Rainbow Europe Index, which has been a vital measure of LGBTQ+ rights across the continent. A decade ago, I was incredibly proud to see the UK leading the charge, holding the number one spot for inclusivity. It was a time filled with hope and progress - but also then with vicious backlash especially regarding trans rights. However, in recent years, Malta has taken the lead, becoming a new beacon of hope and leadership in LGBTQ+ rights. This shift reminds me that legal, societal, and cultural change can happen swiftly and unfortunately can disappear just as quickly. I wish I could say I am not scared, scared for my trans and non-binary siblings, scared for all of us. I am, these are scary times, not just in the UK but across numerous countries. I am trying to root myself in optimism and also rediscovered strength to fight for an inclusive and equitable environment for us all.🌟 #LGBTQ #Equality #Inclusion #Diversity #LGBTQRights #RainbowEurope #ImpactCulture
