This new report explores the causes of social isolation and loneliness, including structural causes, in the UK and Australia – and provides an overview of community and environmental interventions. UCL Policy Lab Director Marc Stears had it right when he said, "Social connections change lives for the better. That’s why we need to build public policies that respect and value connection and build a sense of shared community. It is vital if we are to tackle the deep-seated problems facing democracies around the world." These recommendations struck me in particular: 🔘 The local neighbourhood is the most impactful level at which to intervene on entrenched issues such as community disconnection, and to galvanise meaningful change. 🔘 Tackling loneliness requires thinking outside of the box. Innovative solutions such as ‘nudging’ small behavioural changes can promote more accessible opportunities for connection. 🔘 Significant investment from governments and non-government sectors in programmes that facilitate social cohesion has the potential for far-reaching health, social and economic benefits. Lot's of great insights here that resonate with my work on social infrastructure in the UK – both in my academic research, and in my work at Institute for Community Studies. Creating neighbourhoods that are able to facilitate social connection is integral – not only for addressing those important health and wellbeing outcomes – but for creating places that are a joy to live in. A city, town or neighbourhood that has robust social infrastructure is much more likely to be a city town or neighbourhood where communities are able to come together and where people show up for one another in times of need.

Useful contributions on solutions for more connected communities here from UCL Policy Lab lab.Strongly agree on the need for focus on connection and also the opportunity for nudges to connect being built in to our everyday lives. Goods and services are often meant for consumption and thus have an ad-hoc or short term impact on communities. However, when capacity is built through mental transformation, personal and skills development, there is a strong tendency to generate long term benefits for persons and communities. Those bags of rice, oil, laundry soap, sanitary pads, didactic materials, etc are very important but will be consumed and extinguished in the shortrun. As important as these and their provision is, there is limited sustainability to their output. When you bring food, you will need to bring it again and again but when you bring capacity-building, you have brought a stream that can produce and keep reproducing. It is true every CSO has its social entrepreneurship model and its goals/objectives, with it's peculiar value proposition but the tendency in our contemporary society is to treat the work of NGOs that focus on capacity-building with disdain since their output is less palpable than goods that are available and consumable in the "now". It is recommended that NGOs should incorporate capacity-building as central to their models. "It is better to teach someone how to fish than to provide him fish". 🌟 A Journey of Collaboration and Change 🌟 I’m thrilled to share a story that is close to my heart, highlighting the incredible work of my colleague and dear friend, Magdalena Acuña, and our shared passion for making a difference. Magdalena and I are both part of the CivicAction DiverseCity Fellows Program, and our conversations have been nothing short of transformative. During one of our deep dives into the state of the social services sector, we discussed the urgent need for systems change. We focused on the importance of sharing resources to truly benefit those we serve. Our dialogue covered the evolving funding models and the sector’s transition to outcome and performance based approaches. The question is: Are we incentivizing the right things? 🤝 It’s clear that now, more than ever, agencies need to collaborate. Yet, our current legislation, policies, and mandates often create barriers that disincentivize partnership and collective efforts across the sector. This needs to change. We need a values-based, ethical approach to service delivery, one that places the client at the center of every decision. Imagine the impact we could make if agencies pooled their knowledge and resources. Together, we could prevent our stakeholders from falling into social assistance and Ontario Works, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for those we serve and their families for generations to come. Governments need to enable and support this collaborative spirit. Let's push for changes that allow us to work better together, for the greater good. ✨ The value-add of true partnership is immense. By working together, we can achieve so much more for our communities. The 2024 IoD Convention aims to highlight the concept of social capital and its role in fostering economic growth and enhancing the social wellbeing of our community. But first, we need to understand the importance of social capital. Social capital is important because it represents the productive benefits of sociability. It's the shared values, norms, trust, and belonging that make social exchange possible. Our society, economy, institutions, and political system could not exist without social capital. Mr Claridge's research into Guernsey's social capital will help us probe change for the better of our local community, enabling collaboration and cooperation. There's a lot of talk about better supporting regional communities to create impact but are we? While there are pockets of excellence, so many people I know who are involved in and even running social enterprises and social impact initiatives don't even use the language and certainly do not have access to networks of support.
