Our data from across 3 Integrated Care System Regions showed that only 4% of #kidney #research studies included adaptations to improve ethnic #diversity in #ClinicalTrials.. Yesterday was International or World Clinical Trials Day. A day designed to mark the first randomised trial and the importance of this type of #research for developments in care that optimise #prevention, #identification and #management of #healthissues. Over the past 6 months we’ve been fortunate to have #NHSEngland #funding to look at 5 years of research studies on #kidneydisease undertaken in primary and secondary care. Focusing on 3 ICS regions, after screening over 142 studies reporting data on a total of 11,240 #patients, we found that only 6% made adjustments that broaden #engagement from #underserved communities. This reduced to 4% when looking at #clinicaltrials #data only. Why does this matter? People experience the same health condition in very different ways. To improve #equity in relevance of #evidence from trials and other types of research , it’s important to include the diversity of people intended to benefit. Still a long way to go but we hope to #influence #infrastructure and #capacity to support #inclusive research prioritisation, design, funding, and implementation. #healthservice #healthservicesresearch #healthresearch #chronickidneydisease #kidneydisease #kidneyfailure #researchdesign #researchfunding #lifeofaresearcher #highereducation #healthinnovation #clinicaltrial #underserved #divesity #healthequity #healthinequalities #underrepresentation #equalitydiversityinclusion Sunil Daga Paula Ormandy Fez Awan Phillip Smith Aston University Aston Business School University of Hertfordshire

Congratulations on this important research work, Professor Shivani Sharma. From your topic, it seems like we are working on similar projects and we share a common vision for engaging with ethnic communities, even though we operate in different areas. I am very interested in your findings. Cultural adaptation is important in all interactions with ethnic communities, as it helps reassure them that their needs are valued. While there has been extensive research on engaging with people from these ethnic communities, I am curious to know how many of these findings have been successfully implemented to enhance relations and increase engagement. Thank you for your continued passion in finding a solution to engaging with people from ethnic communities.
