In recent months, many discussions have centered around the topic of #migration, often linked to questions of security policy. At times, the debate derails into an almost hysterical tone. Meanwhile, in Berlin, #migration is a daily reality, manifesting in various (!) forms — whether through EU freedom of movement, the arrival of refugees, skilled worker and labor migration, or international students.
Yet, positive examples remain vastly underrepresented in public perception. There are numerous amazing initiatives and projects on the ground, often led by just a few people with a migratory background, but they make a significant #impact.
In my two years at Totschka - Children's and Youth Library in Berlin, I’ve had the privilege of getting to know many initiatives through direct exchange. Here is just a snapshot:
• Panda Platforma Berlin – Interdisciplinary and open-format art space for everyone in the heart of Berlin, organizing a #SafeSpace for refugees
• Sunflower Care e.V. – Refugee support, work with disabled individuals, evacuations
• Club Dialog e.V. – Integration services, education projects for migrant communities
• PLAY Berlin! – Creative workshops for families with refugee experience in Berlin
• Clavis School of Art and Science – Education center
• studio3.4berlin – Platform for inclusive creative, educational projects, performances, and workshops
• Zuckerwattenkrawatten – Creative studio for families with children
These and many other initiatives and places are powered by the energy and creativity of an entire community. People who come to Berlin from other countries don’t arrive empty-handed. They bring valuable qualities, skills, ideas and willingness to participate! We need to empower them and provide opportunities for them to contribute, in political, professional and cultural ways!
Thank you to the Friedrich Ebert Foundation for organizing the #Migration Conference. It was very inspiring, and it was clear that we not only need a new narrative on #migration but also urgently need to create measures for professional and social #integration.
