“Shell & Co to Install Three Monopiles at Dutch Offshore Wind Farm in ‘Silent Mode’” April 12, 2024, - Adrijana Buljan “Ecowende, a joint venture between Shell and Eneco, and the Dutch company GBM Works have signed a contract for deploying GBM’s #noisereductiontechnology for the installation of three #monopiles at the #offshorewindfarm Ecowende will build at Hollandse Kust West (HKW) Site VI in the Netherlands.” “GBM has developed an installation method called Vibrojet that combines #vibrations on the top of the monopile with GBM’s #jettingtechnology inside the monopile, which makes the installation more #silent and thus minimises the impact on #marinelife , according to GBM.” “Ecowende and the Vibrojet developer also highlighted that the technique is more efficient as it allows monopiles to be installed quicker, compared to the traditional impact hammer, as well as deeper, compared to using a #Vibrohammer only.” “For GBM Works, the contract represents the first application of Vibrojet on a commercial project.” “Marcelo Werneck, Business Development Director at GBM Works, said: “Hollandse Kust West represents our entrance to the offshore installation market and we are proud to contribute to Ecowende on its #ecological ambitions. The following year, the company announced it would build a prototype machine under the SIMPLE II project in 2022.” “Shell and Eneco secured the development rights for Hollandse Kust West VI in December 2022. Last year, the joint venture unveiled plans for the 760 MW offshore wind farm to be built “in harmony with nature, with minimal impact on birds, bats, and marine mammals”.” “In September 2023, Ecowende partnered with Waardenburg Ecology, the largest ecological consultancy firm in the Netherlands, to develop a comprehensive ecological programme for the offshore wind farm.” “At the beginning of this year, Eneco and Japan’s Chubu Electric Power signed an agreement that will see the Japanese company acquiring a 30 per cent stake in the Ecowende joint venture, in which Eneco holds 40 per cent. Harmony in the Hills: One of the Most Beautiful Wind Farms Breaking away from factory floors and concrete jungles, let's dive into nature at the SANY Shenxianling Wind Farm, China's first eco-friendly intelligent wind farm. With its stunning landscape design, the wind farm seamlessly blends with the natural environment, turning it into a favorite spot for tours and sightseeing. The wind farm houses 24 units of 2MW wind turbines and one 1.5MW unit, totaling 50MW in installed capacity. This capacity allows it to generate over 140 million kWh of electricity annually, with a utilization rate exceeding 2800 hours. Thanks to its remarkable performance, in 2018, it claimed the top spot among 40 wind farms in Hunan Province. The Shenxianling Wind Farm is also notable for its advanced technology and efficient operations. SANY's self-developed intelligent monitoring system enables it to operate with fewer than five maintenance staff, representing an innovative approach to unmanned and minimally staffed wind farm operations. Compared to a similar-sized coal-fired power plant, it saves over 39,000 tons of standard coal and reduces CO2 emissions by 118,600 tons per year. SANY Renewable Energy's green footprint goes beyond Shenxianling. It has built over 24 wind farms across 12 provinces in China, with a total installed capacity of 7.5GW. Located in Chodov, a town of about 13,000 residents in the Karlovy Vary region of the Czech Republic, the company ensures reliable heat and hot water distribution through a centralized heating system. It supplies around 200,000 GJ of thermal energy to the city each year, sourced from a nearby power plant that uses brown coal for electricity and heat production. Once reliant on coal mining and industry, the Karlovy Vary region is transitioning to a more service-oriented economy as the demand for reducing emissions and moving away from coal grows. 💡By joining the HEAT 35 project, Teplo Chodov will accelerate its transition from coal to sustainable energy sources. Hexicon, a Swedish company known for its twin turbine offshore wind projects, is exploring ways to coexist with the fishing industry by integrating fish farms into its wind energy developments. The concept involves placing fish farms between offshore wind turbine platforms, with fish-catching boxes submerged up to 230 feet below the surface to be periodically harvested and shipped to shore. This innovative approach aims to promote the growth of offshore wind power while preserving a crucial food source. The project, involving Freja Offshore and Subfarm, is planned for a wind farm off the Swedish coast. It represents a broader effort to make energy systems more eco-friendly, with potential benefits like reducing ecological footprints since existing infrastructure can be utilized. This initiative could serve as a model for harmonizing renewable energy production with other maritime industries.

(News) Korea Floating Wind signs an MOU with Ulsan Fisheries Cooperatives and local fishermen's communities. Korea Floating Wind, one of the five developers involved in the Ulsan floating offshore wind project site, signed a cooperation agreement with the Ulsan floating offshore wind power fishermen’s countermeasures committee, and Ulsan Suhyup(National Federation Fisheries Cooperatives), accelerating the construction of what is anticipated to be the world’s largest floating offshore wind farm cluster. On April 23, the parties involved gathered at the Ulsan Chamber of Commerce and Industry(UCCI) to sign the agreement, which aims to expedite the project by fostering cooperation throughout all phases of development, including but not limited to conducting onshore and offshore surveys, acquisition of permits and approval, securing resident support during construction, operation and maintenance. A key focus of the agreement is to strengthen community relations and develop a cooperative model between developers and fisheries to solidify this relationship, which includes engaging stakeholders in a joint study for a win-win existence program. Austin Park Project Director of KF Wind, currently serving as the Chair of Ulsan Floating Offshore Wind Association, expressed optimism that this agreement will serve as a model for community-focused development and contribute significantly to the regional economy. At the ceremony, Mr. Park also said the Ulsan floating offshore wind project sites will make Korea a global floating wind farm operator, making significant contributions to Korea’s Nationally Determined Contribution(NDC) targeting at least 30% of renewable energy by 2036, achieving carbon neutrality and strengthening energy security. The Ulsan floating offshore wind projects by five developers, located about 60-100km east of Ulsan in Korea's Exclusive Economic Zone, plan to have a total capacity of up to 6.2 GW. In April last year, these five project developers launched "the Ulsan Floating Offshore Wind Association" to facilitate smoother cooperation among developers and stakeholders, and the UCCI joined as a special member. We will celebrate the official opening ceremony of Alajärvi wind farm together with partners, landowners, and other stakeholders this week. As landowners are one of the most important stakeholders for a renewable energy project, we asked one landowner his thoughts about renewable energy production. Matti Pesonen sees the value of renewable energy as a significant factor in the modernisation of land use on a broad scale. – Among other things, we have developed former peat production areas on a long-term basis. Properties where energy peat was previously extracted are now used for organic farming, forestry – and renewable electricity is produced with wind turbines and soon also solar power plants. – In other words, the former emission sources have been turned to sequester carbon and, in addition, they are now used to produce renewable energy.
