I grew up in an inner eastern suburb of Melbourne, enjoying an idyllic childhood in an architecturally designed home tailored for family living. Our bush-themed garden supported biodiversity, and our roof garden overflowed with vegetables, fruit, and herbs, embodying sustainable and efficient living. The neighbourhood was walkable and safe, with broad-canopied green streets leading to local shops for essentials.
My childhood was filled with street play, socialising, skateboarding, and endless cycling through the parks and streets with friends. The vibrancy in my street extended beyond kids; the parents were up for a party too, weekends saw conversations on the street that often led to spontaneous dinners and a glass of vino, with picnic rugs spread across the grass verges.
Can we achieve this sort of social, environmental and community value in a denser city? Living models abroad demonstrate not only does it work, but that density can have benefits. Densification, and diversity of housing choices are essential to support population growth, protect our biodiversity, environment and green wedge.
What truly matters is good and courageous design, and planning, supported by a diverse range of expertise—spanning design, planning, placemaking, social value, First Nations voice, heritage, sustainability, environment, transport, archaeology, economics, property, and more. This collective approach allows us to shape a shared vision underpinned by evidence to drive success so we can all flourish alongside our precious environment.
The development of cities and the lives of their inhabitants are deeply interconnected. By purposefully balancing growth and development, we can ensure that Victorians live in cities that are sustainable, equitable, vibrant, green, and creative.

Shaping the future of Victoria, one plan at a time. 🏙️🌳
We recently submitted a comprehensive response proposal to the Victorian State Government, outlining our vision recommendations for a more sustainable, equitable, and liveable state by 2050, for the first consultation round in their efforts to create a New Plan for Victoria. Replacing the current Plan Melbourne, the New Plan will be Victoria’s first state-wide plan to help address the challenges of our growing state.
Our recommendations span across four key themes identified by the Victorian community as priorities for the government to focus on: Affordable Housing and Choice, Equity and Jobs, Thriving and Liveable Suburbs and Towns, and Sustainable Environments and Climate Action.
We're excited to contribute to the conversation on how we can collectively drive Victoria's growth and address the state's planning challenges.
