In honor of Deaf Awareness Month, I’d like to share my story. Diagnosed with cholesteatoma at 14, I’ve undergone seven surgeries and now experience severe bilateral hearing loss. At 28, I realize I’ve lived with this disability for half my life. While I haven’t always embraced my hearing challenges, I’ve discovered three key strengths: 1. Listening Skills: Struggling to hear has made me a more attentive listener, helping me pick up on details others might miss. 2. Empathy: My experiences in challenging communication situations have deepened my understanding and empathy for others. 3. Thoughtful Action: I’ve learned to assess situations carefully before responding, ensuring I fully understand what’s being communicated. This Deaf Awareness Month, I’m excited to celebrate the positives of deafness and share my journey. 💪🎧 #DeafAwarenessMonth #HearingHealth #Empathy #Strengths

Communication for PWD It is beneficial to communicate well with everyone, especially those who are blind, disabled, or belong to other groups. Unfortunately, some hearing coworkers have difficulty communicating successfully in front of a deaf colleague who is alone during break times. They frequently leave out deaf coworkers from conversations, presuming the issues are unimportant to them. This lack of consideration can be harmful and isolating. Regardless of the issue, everyone must learn appropriate ways to include deaf colleagues in conversations and be aware of their communication needs. Let us build an inclusive environment in which everyone feels appreciated and included. ~Plen-Tsarina Bautista Advocate of Deaf Community

Advocating for Accessibility: Empowering Deaf Individuals Ensuring equal opportunities for Deaf individuals is not just a matter of inclusivity; it's a fundamental right. Advocating for accessibility across all facets of life is crucial in fostering a society where everyone can thrive. In employment, healthcare, transportation, and public services, accessibility is key. Highlighting successful advocacy initiatives and campaigns that have led to positive changes in policies, legislation, and infrastructure is vital in paving the way for Deaf inclusion and accessibility. By advocating for accessible workplaces, healthcare facilities equipped with sign language interpreters, transportation services with visual aids, and public spaces designed with Deaf individuals in mind, we can create a more inclusive society for all. Let's continue to champion accessibility rights and work towards a future where Deaf individuals have equal opportunities to pursue their passions, make meaningful contributions, and become leaders and advocates within their communities. #Accessibility #Inclusion #DeafAdvocacy #EqualOpportunities #DeafCommunity #AdvocacyInitiatives #pfrancescafoundation

As many are aware, my son (age 2) was born profoundly deaf. This is extremely hard hitting but seems to be a familiar experience to many deaf people 😞 I've had the privilege of being introduced to the most amazing community of deaf people and I find myself very fortunate to be included by them. Hearing people should be doing the same for them! How would you feel if you weren't included? If every day was a struggle to get access to something that was a basic need? That your ability to access something, others take for granted, was difficult and exhausting? Think about it..... If you have a business who needs training on diversity and inclusion please feel free to reach out. I will be offering inclusion training at a reduced rate as I want as many people to have awareness, as possible. #inclusion #diversity #awareness #deafawareness

This Deaf Awareness Week, let's turn up the volume on inclusivity! We recognise that #diversity isn't just about what we can see or hear. With 12 million people in the UK experiencing some form of deafness, it's crucial that our workplaces reflect and accommodate this diversity. Did you know that #BritishSignLanguage is an official language since 2003? Yet, many D/deaf individuals still face significant barriers in accessing services and information. It's not just about hearing—the D/deaf community has its own rich culture, history, and identity. Here’s how we can all foster a more inclusive environment: - Always face the person you're talking to. - Speak clearly, slowly, and ensure your mouth is visible. - Be patient, repeat, or rephrase if needed. Let’s embrace these practices not just this week but every day to create a workplace where everyone can thrive. 💛🖤 #DeafAwarenessWeek #Inclusion #Diversity #BSL #Accessibility #MahoganyInclusionPartners

As a hearing parent of a deaf child, this truly resonated with me. It made me realise that, in today's climate, my child often bears the burden of advocating for and ensuring their own accessibility. This will not change unless we create Deaf-friendly communities. There's so much potential for improvement if we listen to and involve Deaf-led organisation’s, members of the Deaf community, and parents of deaf children in the conversation. We know everyone is on the same page and wants an inclusive community, but please bring the right people to the conversation to make this happen. This snippet was taken from the SBS episode called *The Deaf Divide*, featuring the wonderful Todd Wright providing his insight. The way forward is true inclusion for all, starting with inclusive planning and discussions about our future. Without this, we risk perpetuating the cycle of advocating against misguided notions of what inclusion truly means. It's crucial for state and federal governments to recognise the importance of involving people with lived experiences to build the communities we all desire. This includes funding Deaf-led and parent-led organisations to drive meaningful, impactful change for our community.
