The article "𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗩𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀" by Harvard Business Review explores the complex decision-making process that VCs undergo when evaluating potential investments. Successful investments hinge on the combination of a strong "jockey" (the entrepreneurial team) and a promising "horse" (the startup’s strategy and business model). However, the study reveals that VCs ultimately prioritize the team, as their execution and adaptability dictate the startup's future. 𝗧𝗼𝗽 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀, 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝘀, 𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀. Interestingly, about 30% of deals are proactively sourced by VCs themselves. They actively seek out founders whose visions align with their own, emphasizing that the best opportunities don’t always walk through their office doors. When assessing investments, company valuation isn’t the primary focus. Unlike large corporations that rely on discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis, 𝗩𝗖𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗵-𝗼𝗻-𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗵 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝘀, 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝘀 over short-term financial metrics. This approach helps VCs concentrate on long-term growth and impact rather than immediate profits. VCs also ensure robust investment management through meticulously designed 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗵 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀, 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀.
