Recent updates reveal a concerning trend in flood risk across Quebec. According to Canadian Underwriter, new flood maps suggest that three times as many homes in Quebec could be located in flood zones compared to previous estimates. This highlights the urgent need for proactive measures to address and mitigate the growing threat of flooding in the region. In the face of climate change, it's crucial for homeowners, insurers, and policymakers to stay informed and take decisive action to protect vulnerable communities. #FloodRisk #ClimateChange #Resilience #Canada

“The developed world has inherited an attitude to flooding that suggests we can just keep building walls higher and higher to defend ourselves. Structural flood protection is not a zero-sum game; the water must go somewhere. And, more often than not, it can end up making matters worse for the places not defended, which usually means it ends up with only the more affluent being afforded the structural measures of protection.” Dr. Oliver Wing (Chief Research Officer, Fathom) offers striking insights in this article by Hiscox and Tom King on why cities and urban areas must deliver innovation in response to the flood risk challenge. https://lnkd.in/d43tFEfX #climatechange #floodrisk #hiscoxglobalinsight

How high a priority is flood management in a local authority? I sense this article shows that priorities are elsewhere... So where should a council spend its money first? Services that are potentially already just making ends meet, or on the fight against rising flood risk? A very difficult choice, but what the article does prove is that managing flood risk is NOT as high on the agenda right now as all other essential services. Councils should not need to “divert” cash towards it. There should already be a budget in place to deliver it. I sense this is a growing issue and shows clear evidence that attitudes need to change from the top down when allocating adequate budget to create more flood resilient communities. #floodresilience #floodrisk #flooding #climatechange #ashfieldflood
