One of the issues we see across councils in #NSW is a lack of uniformity when it comes to #Flood data. One councils appreciation of Flood risk may vary considerably from another, with different input parameters used for indicators such the frequency of Flood events and the depth of Flood waters. Another thing to note is the 10.7 Flood Risk is based on past events and doesn't take #Climatechange into account. With extreme weather events increasing, have we seen the worst of it yet? A new tool – the Municipal Flood Risk Check-Up – launched today by the University of Waterloo's Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation | Centre Intact d’adaptation au climat, will help Canadian municipalities to assess flood hazards, level of flood preparedness, and actions to limit future flood risk. Canada’s National Risk Profile, 2023, identified that the country is not ready for flooding. 10 per cent of Canada’s housing market is uninsurable for overland flooding, and homes in flood impacted communities have sold for up to 17 per cent less following a flood event. The DANA floods in Spain in 2024 caused significant economic losses, with estimated damages ranging from EUR 12 to 13 billion. The floods, which brought record-breaking rainfall, overwhelmed the region’s infrastructure, leading to widespread destruction and a death toll of 224. Flood risk is becoming a key caveat emptor issue. I’ve noticed some places locally with high flood risk are struggling to sell. But those are already obvious ones. The difficulty comes in predicting which properties will be at risk in the not so distant future.
