Thank you to everyone who joined us for an insightful seminar on London's air pollution journey with Prof. Frank Kelly, from Imperial College. From the historic "pea soup" smog to becoming an ultra-low emission city, Prof. Kelly shared valuable perspectives on the public health impacts and policy initiatives driving this transformation, inspiring a productive discussion on the future of urban air quality. #AirQuality #PublicHealth #SustainableCities #UrbanPolicy #EnvironmentalHealth Qatar Environment & Energy Research Institute - QEERI Hamad Bin Khalifa University #QEERI #HBKU Rami Alfarra

Are you aware of the direct source of your water? Understanding upstream and downstream dynamics in water management will help you understand the situation. The principle of upstream and downstream dynamics highlights how actions in one area can significantly impact water quality in another. For instance, pollutants like agricultural runoff, industrial discharges, or untreated wastewater introduced upstream can contaminate water as it travels downstream. This contamination jeopardizes human health and disrupts ecosystems and wildlife that rely on clean water. Protecting upstream water sources is therefore critical for preserving clean and safe water downstream, which is crucial for drinking, agriculture, and recreation. Ensuring water quality isn't just an environmental issue; it's community well-being. At IDRA, we are committed to protecting our water sources through sustainable practices and community engagement. Our Be Water Positive + Initiative promotes actions safeguarding upstream water quality, ensuring a ripple effect of downstream benefits. The ongoing Israeli aggression on Gaza for a year has caused enormous losses in various sectors. However, the environmental impact of the war, which receives little attention, may be one of the most dangerous consequences for Gaza, as the environment has witnessed unprecedented widespread destruction. Restoring balance to the environment may take decades. A new article on the environmental impact of the Israeli aggression on Gaza. This #WorldWaterDay, we draw attention to urgent need to mobilise collaborative action towards sustainably managing all our water resources, from source to sea, to conserve and restore the ocean's natural capital and promote sustainable blue economies. IPCC projects that sea-level rise will increase salinity levels of groundwater, decreasing freshwater availability for humans and ecosystems in coastal areas. The impact of this, in the context of the MENA region is massive: - The five most water-stressed countries globally are Bahrain, Cyprus, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman and Qatar. (World Resources Institute) - 83% of the population in the MENA are exposed to extremely high water stress. (World Resources Institute) - To meet increasing demand, the MENA region accounts for about 48% of the 95 million cubic metres of desalinated water produced each day worldwide, to supply us with water for consumption. (The National News) - Desalination produces about 1.5 to 1.7 litres of salty brine waste per litre of freshwater, which when released back into the sea, can increase local salt concentration, potentially harming marine life, especially creatures found near the seabed. We invite partners and thought leaders to amplify your impact through this cross-sectoral initiative, aimed at bringing regional ocean priorities to the forefront to drive awareness and catalyze solutions. Given the water crisis, Iraq is actively exploring alternative, sustainable water sources. Desalination, once a costly, and energy consuming option limited to developed countries, is now more financially feasible and climate-friendly as modern plants can operate entirely on solar power. UNDP has successfully implemented two water treatment projects: one in #Basra in partnership with UNICEF and supported by the #Netherlands, and another in Al-Hawizeh Marshes under the regional #SDG Climate Facility project with funding from Sida. These initiatives, if managed sustainably, are crucial not only for providing sustainable water sources but also for creating jobs and reducing poverty. These topics were thoroughly discussed at a panel during the 4th Baghdad International Water Conference, which saw participation from international key figures in the field.

Clean water is a human right, not a privilege. This #WorldWaterDay, we are building awareness of the importance of protecting this precious resource. Last year, the UAE called for action on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly to confront the urgent challenges caused by water scarcity – a critical issue that threatens global public health, economic prosperity, geopolitical stability, migration patterns and food security. The UAE Water Strategy 2036, launched by the @Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure is a plan to ensure sustainable access to safe water under all conditions, promoting peace and stability. This is just one step that has been taken in the UAE, but more efforts will be needed in the coming years. Read more about the UAE’s recent calls to the global community. https://lnkd.in/ePi9pQJM
