At the #EOSCSympsium held in Berlin Oct. 21-24, the European Commission launched EOSC EU NODE. A series of services aimed at accelerating Open Science diffusion in Europe. Our latest research paper has been accepted to TMLR - the aim is to estimate how confident a retrieval system (a search engine) is when outputting a ranking in response to a user query ! ✅ ❓ Many modern retrieval system work by computing a similarity between the embeddings of a query and documents in a given corpus. Simply using the similarity score however is often not a good way of approximating model confidence... ➡️ In this work, we show looking at the score distribution of the top retrieved documents (and not just the top one) yields a much richer signal, essentially enabling us to better identify whether user queries are easy to answer or not. 🔬 We explore various heuristics and learning-based approaches, run tons of ablations, and are able to derive confidence scores with almost no compute overhead, that work well across various datasets, languages and various models. 🚀 A big use case of this research is being able to "abstain"; ie. having systems that prefer not giving an answer when they are likely to be wrong - thus improving trustworthiness. Beyond this paper, I believe confidence estimations are a super promising avenue to explore for Information Retrieval systems and there are tons of ideas to test out in this space ! Our ECE Department - University of Patras PhD candidate, Mr. Konstantinos Giotis, who is conducting his doctoral research in collaboration with the University of Sorbonne, has achieved a remarkable milestone. Along with his colleagues, he has been awarded the 𝟏𝐬𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐏𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫 (prix La Pérouse) by the French National Cold Plasma Network of the National Center for Scientific Research in France (https://lnkd.in/d4Znf8Qv) during this year's proceedings in Carry-le-Rouet. 👉 This novel work focuses on the application of AI (ML) tools in cold plasma diagnostics.
