Amid the insightful discussions at the Early-Stage Finance Conference, we found a moment to catch up with Zee de Gersigny, Investment, Head - Venture & Early-Stage Financing Vehicles, right off the main stage. She emphasised that while the African market holds great promise, it remains in its early stages and requires substantial capacity-building efforts. A key challenge is the need for intermediaries to establish a strong track record to attract confidence from global investors. This track record is vital for novel investments and financial vehicles tailored to the African context. To unlock #Africa's potential, the focus must shift toward creating an ecosystem that supports sustainable growth. This includes investing in skills development, providing technical assistance, and improving regulatory frameworks to make the market more conducive to local and international investment. Building local capacity will be essential for the long-term success of venture and early-stage financing in Africa, enabling the continent to transition from a nascent market to a thriving investment hub. -- #MakingFinanceWork #EarlyStageFinance #InnovativeSolutions -- Juliet Munro, Anne-Marie Chidzero, Reshma Shah, Mary Kashangaki, Shannon Wangwe, Waithera Njiiri, Keziah Kibata, LENAH MORAA, Judith Nekesa, May Yego, Zee de Gersigny, Loreen Gitonga, Golda Bagaja, Amos Gachuiri, Nicolas Kirui, Ian Muiru -- Nithio, Holocene, First Circle Capital, Five35 Ventures, iungo capital, Linea Capital, Catalyst Fund, FrontEnd Ventures, Africa Climate Ventures, Climate Resilient Africa Fund, Persistent

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending the 10-year Dutch Good Growth Fund (DGGF) Knowledge event in Amsterdam 🇳🇱, alongside several impact investors, government agencies, and innovators active in #emergingmarkets, such as British International Investment, FMO - Dutch entrepreneurial development bank, Ankur Capital, Endeavor, and Village Capital. The discussions highlighted both the progress made and the challenges still faced by #Africa and other #underservedmarkets, which remain largely dependent on ODA and non-local funding, and the recurring theme was the need to strengthen local capital mobilisation. As our team takes stock of the end of our 6th year at Briter, I want to reflect on how we are working towards tackling most of these challenges: 🔸 Perceived risk asymmetry: There is still a gap between how risky these markets are perceived to be and the reality on the ground. Briter is tackling this by improving data transparency, providing investors with regular insights into local markets and keeping a strictly data-driven approach. 🔸 Attractive investment opportunities elsewhere: With investors often drawn to higher-return markets, the challenge for these economies lies in positioning themselves as competitive investment destinations. Through our sector-focused research and reports, Briter helps local ventures present compelling value propositions to global audiences and highlight their long-term growth potential, drawing attention to untapped opportunities. 🔸 Lack of knowledge and expertise: Local ecosystems often struggle with the technical and financial expertise required to structure investments that attract both local and global investors. At Briter, we are building tools that connect local stakeholders with experts, investors, and technical assistance providers, to enhance the quality of the local pipeline. 🔸 Regulatory and policy barriers: Complex and inconsistent regulations continue to hinder investment. By regularly engaging with policymakers and collaborating with stakeholders, Briter is working to create data-driven frameworks that inform more conducive regulatory environments across Africa, making it easier for investors to navigate these markets. 🔸 Limited financial infrastructure (and access): Without a robust financial infrastructure, it's difficult for local capital to engage effectively. Briter’s advisory contributes to strengthening financial ecosystems by connecting investors, entrepreneurs, and policymakers with the insights and tools they need to foster local capital mobilisation. Though Briter's very mission and ethos have been to showcase the 'brighter' side of underserved markets to a global audience, reliance on external funding can only take us so far. What’s needed is a paradigm shift to empower local ecosystems to generate and mobilise capital internally, to foster more resilient, self-sustaining markets that can chart their paths to growth and innovation, less dependent on outside assistance.

We welcome you to join LPs, GPs, and portfolio companies for the Africa Value Creation Intensive (AVCI) scheduled for 25 March 2024 in New York. Investments incorporating #systems-level factors can ensure resilient value creation and generate long-term risk-adjusted returns. Although LPs, GPs and portfolio companies recognise the potential for generating value through sustainability, gaps in knowledge and implementation still exist. In Africa, this is particularly challenging, and now more than ever, it is not enough to deploy capital, deliver impact and exit successfully. Join us in New York on the 25 March 2024 at the Bank of America Tower for a deep dive into how #LPs, #GPs and #PortfolioCompanies in Africa can build systemic resilience through sustainability levers of value creation. Our co-founder Richard Bavlsík attended the HVCA Investment Conference yesterday! 💼✨ 🌍 The panels provided an international outlook: With a special focus on the various perspectives of VCs from the region, compared to Hungary. One thing is sure: CEE ecosystems are rising. ↗️ 🤝 The networking opportunities were a highlight. Beyond VCs, the event attracted a diverse mix of professionals, including consultants, private equity, experts, and service providers. All contributing to dynamic discussions. 💡 One major takeaway: the role of the state in innovation ecosystems. There's a clear consensus that while governments should help kickstart financing, they need to step back as the ecosystem matures. All in all, it was a day packed with valuable perspectives on the priorities and challenges investors face in today's market. #InnoMakerPartners #HVCA2024 #investmentconference #venturecapital

📢 Insights from the East Africa Private Equity & Venture Capital Association (EAVCA) Conference: Family Business -Building Foundations For Growth In a powerful panel discussion on #FamilyBusinesses, Jayesh Shah, the Managing Director Sumaria Group shared valuable lessons on how Family Owned Businesses can position themselves to attract #PrivateEquity financing: 🔑 Professionalize the business - To bring in outside capital, it's essential to #Professionalize the #business and ensure transparency. One key step is to corporatize operations and separate family involvement from day-to-day management. 👨👩👦 Succession Planning: A clear #successionplan is crucial. It's not always the founder who can lead the business into the future. Embrace the next generation and identify the right family members to take on leadership roles. 📊 One Set of audited Books: Ensure that there’s a single, transparent set of #FinancialRecords to build trust with potential investors. Integrity in financial reporting is non-negotiable. 📅 Formal Meetings: Conduct formal Annual General Meetings (#AGMs) to maintain #professionalism and ensure all stakeholders are aligned on the business direction. 📜 Create a Constitution: A well-defined family business #constitution helps guide decision-making, ensures consistency, and addresses potential conflicts. 🏢 Board Involvement: Even if family members aren’t involved in day-to-day operations, they can still contribute strategically by serving on the #Board, helping steer the business from a high-level perspective. These insights are a must for any family-owned business looking to scale, attract investment, and ensure long-term success! 💡Are you a family owned business, seeking to raise expansion or working capital?
