Recently, I've been exploring the venture capital (VC) space, partly inspired by my internship with a management and financial consulting firm. As I delve into various resources, questions naturally arise. One of them, which I am yet to do further research on, is the investment landscape in Ghana 😃. But I realised something! Immediate attempts most of the time to find answers to my never-ending questions put me at the risk of neglecting other scheduled tasks. Hence, I've learned to jot down these queries and make time in subsequent schedules to find my desired responses. From this, I appreciated the following lessons better: ⬇️ Our endeavours are continuous learning processes. ⬇️ We can't learn it all in a day or in a night. ➡️ With each step, we gain experience and gradually become experts 😊. #careerdevelopment #growth #optimism

I recently concluded my internshship with Energy Innovation Capital (EIC) on Extern platform and it has been an enlightening experience that I would eagerly repeat. ElC is a venture capital firm investing in companies developing the next generation of technology to ensure abundant, clean, and accessible energy-a great initiative. What is particularly important, especially for the Global South, is the need to shift our mindset towards innovative entrepreneurship. With the convergence of technology and a business-oriented approach, coupled with the immense opportunities emerging in the energy industry, we need only the right tools and mindset to succeed. This internship provided a detailed analysis of the energy market landscape, mentoring on analyzing start-up pitch decks, presentation of investment summaries and other essential insights, equipping participants with the knowledge necessary to thrive in this evolving sector. In the Global South, we have immense opportunities to become entrepreneurs rather than seeking white-collar jobs, which are often scarce. This shift can significantly reduce energy poverty by creating employment and increasing energy access. By fostering an entrepreneurial spirit among our youth, we can drive sustainable development and economic growth. #EnergyInnovation #VentureCapital #CleanEnergy #SustainableEnergy #GlobalSouth #EnergyTransition #YouthEntrepreneurship #GreenTech #FutureOfEnergy #EmpowerTheSouth #EnergyAccess #TechForGood #EntrepreneurMindset #EnergyInvestment #EICExperience #EconomicGrowth #EnergyOpportunity #StartupEcosystem #EnergyInnovationCapital

“What do you think if I were to join VC upon graduation?” — asked Daria Chung, our energetic intern analyst from #HKUST Hi Daria, The fact is, I generally DON’T advise students to join #VC immediately after graduating with a bachelor’s degree. I believe you and other fresh graduates may need the following: ⭐️ Structured Training VC, particularly in private market funds, often involves smaller teams compared to banks or consulting firms. This can mean less formal training and no structured programs organized by a proper training department. Your learning will heavily depend on the senior professionals around you, whom you work with, and how willing they are to teach. Unless there’s a highly commendable mentor to guide you, the learning curve can be steep, and such opportunities are not commonly found. ⭐️ Battlefield & Building Experience Understanding market best practices and sharpening your skill set are crucial. I uphold professionalism. Ideally, you should gain exposure to a front desk role where you interact with clients, learn to meet their dynamic needs, and even handle challenging situations. In VC, we frequently advise at the board level and collaborate closely with founders. Without this solid and dynamic work experience, it can be challenging to navigate the complexities of the industry. It’s even better if you have built something by rolling up your sleeves. After all, you can’t bluff your way through your career. ⭐️ Self-Motivation and a Can-Do Mentality In VC, we often operate like solo hunters. Until a potential investment is solidified, we can’t allocate excessive manpower resources on a particular deal. This requires you to maintain a #disciplined workflow, momentum, and systematic information organization. Stay motivated—after a deal investment and an exit, we need to keep the engine running and persistently generate capital. In this dynamic environment, there are no limits, so a can-do attitude will accelerate your career advancement. Such qualities are built over time and experience. I’m grateful for the tough times I faced in my previous roles; they were valuable lessons. Your #career is like a storybook, and you own your story. Engage with mentors and seek advice, as you are well positioned to learn now! I am pleased to announce that I have completed my internship for summer 2024 at Middle East Venture Partners (MEVP). As I look back at my time throughout the internship, I see an invaluable opportunity that turned into an unforgettable experience. As an Investment Analyst intern, I analyzed startup performance to assess potential investments, taking into account financial metrics and growth potential. I evaluated market conditions to determine the viability of startups within specific industries and regions. My work involved developing and presenting analytical findings using Excel and PowerPoint, which played a key role in the investment decision-making process. Here are some of my key takeaways from the internship: 1. Seek Knowledge: I learned the importance of constantly seeking knowledge and staying curious. Whether it’s understanding the nuances of a new market, diving deep into financial metrics, or simply asking questions, the pursuit of knowledge is essential. This mindset not only helps in making informed decisions but also in staying ahead in a rapidly changing environment. 2. Execute Immediately: In the fast-paced world MEVP and other VC firms live in, I realized the significance of executing ideas and strategies without delay. The difference between a good idea and a successful one often lies in the speed of execution. By acting quickly, I was able to capitalize on opportunities and drive meaningful results, reinforcing the notion that timing is everything in business. 3. The CEO is Just a Human: At first, I felt intimidated to walk into the CEO's office and ask him questions, but it was later on that I realized that that is where some of the most significant things I learned throughout the internship were found. Working closely with leadership, I discovered that even the most successful CEOs are just people, with their own strengths and challenges. This realization helped me build up the confidence required to ask the questions and seek out the opportunities. 4. The Market Won’t Wait for You: I learned that the market is constantly evolving, and it won’t wait for anyone to catch up. This taught me the importance of staying proactive, continuously monitoring market trends, and being ready to adapt strategies quickly. When given a startup to analyze, it was imperative that I went through the KPI's and other financial metrics quickly, yet meticulously, in order to make a fast yet calculated decision that would ultimately yield MEVP a substantial ROI, while providing large amounts of benefit to the startup. Finally, I would like to thank Walid Hanna and Walid Mansour for accepting me into the MEVP family, Naldo Bejjani for mentoring and guiding me through the process, and Luca Rachid and Melisa Caglar for sharing this wonderful experience with me!
