There is no viable climate solution without nature. Yet this year's COP hallways and negotiations are notably missing its presence - both literally and figuratively. The Blue Zone devoid of sunshine and nature, feels symbolic of a larger challenge of recognising nature in the climate negotiations. 🌱 The numbers tell a revealing story: we ran a quick analysis and found that nature-related mentions in the media during the first week of COP29 decreased by 71% compared to COP28. But today, marked a critical moment. Greenhouse Communications worked with the Nature4Climate Coalition to convene more than 80 organisations to demand stronger recognition of nature in the New Collective Quantified Goal on climate finance. 🗣️ Read the COP29 Nature Statement here: https://lnkd.in/eS5YRCix I feel deeply inspired by how the global nature and climate community mobilized within just 48 hours to amplify this important message. As we approach tomorrow's Nature and Indigenous Peoples Day, I hope governments recognise that we must lead and invest #WithNature. As the dust settles on #COP29, it’s clear this year’s climate summit was fraught with contention. The process, which aspires to be inclusive, transparent, and party-led, has faced significant criticism over the last two weeks. Despite these ideals, the reality is stark: COP29 and the global north have failed the developing countries that are most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Rather than delivering on promises of bold ambition, the outcomes signal a disappointing scenario—one that offers little assurance that developing nations will receive the support they need to adapt and address the escalating impacts of climate change. 🖋️ Sally Tyldesley Laura Bahlman https://bit.ly/4i7jNtF

As the Under2 Coalition General Assembly at #COP29Azerbaijan approaches, we’re eager to foster collaborative conversations and drive action among leaders. We’ll be there to showcase how subnational governments have a vital role to play in tackling climate change, as they have the scale and the means to shift the needle on climate. We need the highest level of ambition for our climate at this crucial time. We can prevent the worst impacts of climate change. But we have to act now. Our main priority areas include: ⭕️Pushing for stronger NDCs, developed with subnational governments, in time for the next deadline of February 2025. ⭕️Calling for effective and accessible climate finance, including through the new global goal (New Collective Quantified Goal) set to be agreed at COP29. ⭕️Demonstrating increased ambition on energy, transport, industry, food and methane emissions reduction. I’ve been saying for a number of years now that attending the annual COPs of the climate regime are a waste of carbon for most people for many reasons, most notably given the lack of transparency and inclusion of non-state actors at this point. Apparently a number of businesses are coming to similar conclusions this year (but for different reasons) https://lnkd.in/ercv3z4X

Here is a recent Oped I wrote calling on us to recognize that the current system (COP) designed to manage climate change and mitigate its effects is deeply flawed and ineffective. The time has come to create a robust collective decision-making body in the form of a World Parliament to tackle this serious global challenge in an effective and just manner. Touchdown in Baku! The Greenhouse team is on the ground at COP29, supporting the Action On Food Hub, the COP29 Children and Youth Pavilion, and Nature4Climate. The central focus of this 'Finance COP' is setting a new global climate finance goal. With significant disagreements anticipated, it’s vital that any new target aligns with the Paris Agreement and acknowledges nature as an intrinsic element in combatting the climate crisis. While the outcome of the next two weeks is uncertain, one thing is clear: we cannot afford further delays. There must be real momentum and concrete financial commitments that translate into genuine impact for both climate and nature, particularly for those on the front lines of the climate crisis 🌏 If you're attending, do stop by and say hello over the next two weeks! Here at COP29 with my Greenhouse Communications gang and Nature4Climate! We are three days in, what's happened on nature so far? 1️⃣ ✈️ More than 80 leaders descended to COP29. At this ‘finance COP’, the top priority for the presidency is hammering out a new global goal for climate finance. We must ensure that the new global goal is aligned with the goals of the Paris Agreement and explicitly supports nature as our biggest ally against climate change. 2️⃣ 🇬🇧 🇧🇷 NDCs: Yesterday, we saw a strong new NDC for climate and nature from the UK. Demonstrating the kind of leadership that is expected from big emitters as we head toward COP30. Today, Brazil launched its second NDC. Compared to the previous 2030 target, the ambition for absolute emissions reduction has increased by 13% to 29%. Data from Nature4Climate shows Brazil could meet half its NDC targets through natural climate solutions. 3️⃣🌳 Yesterday, leaders and ministers gathered at the event organised by the Forest & Climate Leaders' Partnership (FCLP) to highlight recent progress and outline strategies to tackle ongoing challenges in meeting the shared goal of halting and reversing forest loss and land degradation by 2030 4️⃣🌱 A step forward on Article 6 negotiations following the approval of the new 6.4 standards. The Article 6.4 Supervisory Body, which is responsible for designing the UN's new carbon market framework under the Paris Agreement, completed essential standards to cover carbon removals and methodological standards guidance. This builds on previous failed attempts to reach an agreement at COP28 – the process has stalled since the Paris Agreement. Nature4Climate is running a daily COP29 wrap-up. The Paris Climate Agreement stands as a beacon of hope in the global fight against climate change. Adopted in December 2015 at the 21st Conference of the Parties (COP21) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), this historic accord represents a collective commitment by nearly 200 countries to combat climate change and limit global warming. Achieving this ambitious target is crucial for safeguarding our planet and mitigating the most severe impacts of climate change. The UNFCCC insists it is the only legitimate body that can decide on climate finance goals. However, only the G20 can effectively decide how that goal is reached. IMHO, that paradox is allowing our world to burn #GlobalCarbonFeeAndDividendPetition https://lnkd.in/g--Jv9RX
