Earlier this month, Earthshot Week took place in Cape Town and we were invited to participate! Three young reporters attended alongside the Radio Workshop team: Curtis Mkhize from Phoenix in KwaZulu-Natal, Thembinkosi Mahlangu from Siyabuswa in Mpumalanga and Logan Hansen from Atlantis in the Western Cape. The trio had an opportunity to cover the week’s activities and talk about their work at community radio stations with climate change experts and activists from across the globe. Thembinkosi shared, “A significant moment for me was realising that people everywhere can make a difference in addressing climate change.” To kickstart the week, Executive Director Vuyo Lutseke delivered an ‘Audio Storytelling for Impact’ masterclass for the Earthshot Prize finalists with Melissa Mbugua, head of Radio Workshop’s East Africa Partnerships. The masterclass aimed to help the finalists understand the power of audio, particularly podcasting, and how it can enhance their work. Later, Vuyo and Project Coordinator Mary-Ann Nobele, led a narrative storytelling workshop as part of the Earthshot Prize Youth Programme, with a live radio show demo. Logan, who attended the session to support the team said, “It was a reminder of how radio can amplify voices, bring communities together, and make important topics like climate change accessible and engaging.” This was the first time that Earthshot was hosted in Africa, and it brought together a global community committed to driving climate action and innovative solutions. Congratulations to the Earthshot Prize winners, and thank you to Bloomberg Philanthropies for making our participation possible.

As usual, the ClimateWorks Foundation 2024 Funding Trends report is a wealth of useful information about trends in climate philanthropy. A few takeaways that resonated with the Climate Smart Forest Economy Program (CSFEP): 🌍 Foundation funding for climate change in Africa grew by 173% between 2019 and 2023--but is still dwarfed by climate funding for the U.S. and Europe (which collectively secure 60% of climate funding). 🌍Philanthropy is starting to increase focus on climate resilience and adaptation--distributing $600M in 2023. 🌍 Only about 14% of the funding distributed to low- and middle-income countries in 2023 was provided as flexible, core funding--compared to about 30% of funding to the U.S. and Europe. See the link in our comments to the report.

📢 The BSA are pleased to launch a new evaluation report in partnership with UK Research and Innovation and Science Ceilidh revealing the impact of the Highlands and Islands Climate Change Community Grant programme, empowering local groups to tackle climate issues with researchers since 2021. Thank you to The Scottish Community Development Centre for producing the report! The scheme has supported community groups in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland since 2021 to work with researchers on projects that tackle a local climate change issue that matters to them. The findings from the report demonstrate the value of equitable partnerships in driving meaningful climate action. Key findings from the report: ✅Community groups led budget decisions, enabling them to plan and achieve their goals. ✅Community groups and researchers developed strong, equitable and collaborative partnerships. ✅1-to-1 support & peer learning built confidence to drive local change and engage in research. ✅Capacity-building grants addressed systemic challenges, especially in marginalised communities. Kate Orchard, Head of Community Engagement at the British Science Association, said: "At the BSA, we are committed to improving the connections between the public and research, particularly in ways that will bring the voices of those who are often not heard to the forefront. The Highlands & Islands Climate Change Community Grant scheme has been a fantastic programme to work on, and has demonstrated the real value in supporting communities and researchers to work more closely together, and so I’m delighted we are able to share this report. Climate change affects migration in diverse, locally specific ways. As a result, localized solutions are the most effective way to address it. Yet development actors have had a hard time localizing climate mobility solutions. While the why of this problem is well known, the how to overcome it has been less studied. Until now. Our new research, by Lawrence Huang and Camille Le Coz, offer a set of concrete actions and strategies that both international partners and local actors can begin to implement: 🍃 Engage local actors from day one and at every step of a project 🍃 Build in designating funding and leverage philanthropic actors better suited for smaller-sized, riskier, more-resource intensive projects 🍃 Raise the visibility of local organizations and their climate mobility work at the global level to inspire other local actors, donors and international players to take on similar projects.
