Rapidus Corporation's new semiconductor plant in Hokkaido has achieved significant milestones, with construction soaring past 40 percent completion as of July. The massive site accommodates 3,600 workers and 1,000 vehicles daily and will initiate prototype line operations by April 2024. Hokkaido's financial limitations in replicating New York's semiconductor ecosystem model are stark, given the vast revenue disparity - New York generates a staggering $200 billion annually, while Hokkaido's revenue stands at ¥3 trillion, equivalent to $20.5 billion. Hokkaido Governor Naomichi Suzuki's recent visit to New York highlighted the crucial role of collaboration among industry, academia, and government. However, Rapidus Corporation's ability to mass-produce 2-nm chips by 2027 remains a significant concern, prompting a cautious approach from many companies. New Job opportunities coming up in Italy within the semiconductor sector - Silicon Box to invest €3.2 billion in a manufacturing plant in Italy 🇮🇹 Byung Joon Han, the CEO of the Singaporean startup Silicon Box that was recently given a value of almost € 1 billion met with the Italian Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy - Adolfo Urso -  to sign an agreement to build a chip fab in Italy. Final approval is being awaited from the European Union but design and planning have already begun. 🛠️The fab will most likely be located in one of the northern regions of the European country and with an investment of € 3.2 billion it promises to create more than 1600 #jobs, plus the other several thousand that will be created thanks to the construction of the facility and the logistics ecosystem. The Italian government announced that it  will also be contributing to the project through grants 🔬New opportunities will arise for Italy and Europe also in the #University and #R&D landscape as new professional profiles will be needed to contribute to the advancement of the European Semiconductor industry Silicon Box aims at delivering full execution - from design to manufacturing - of chiplets, which constitute all emerging #technologies, bringing Europe to the forefront of chip production. Just leaving #Tokyo with some key take aways from: 1. the International Semiconductor Executive Summits ISES team around Salah Nasri and Kamel Ait Mahiout again did a great job to gather Semi leaders for networking and insightful presentations on Semi packaging, #powersemi, etc. 2. our #semi Industry will remain busy in driving the growth, but confirmation of key companies give confidence in that 3. Japan is setting also a re-vitalized effort into its contribution for global growth. 4. Even the B$$ announcement on #chip #fabs is capturing better the general audience in media, we learnt with good presentations those 2 days how important the focus also on the final assembled product is, and with that the technology for modules and packaging.
