Scleroderma is a rare rheumatic disease that affects connective tissue and the vascular system producing excessive collagen that causes fibrosis in the skin or in internal organs. The result can be disfigurement and disability, and for some it’s life-threatening. The cause is unknown and there is no cure. A diagnosis of scleroderma doesn’t have to be overwhelming, even though the disease is complex. An experienced rheumatologist who specializes in scleroderma is key to a quick and proper diagnosis that leads to treatment that may help minimize symptoms and decrease the chance of irreversible damage. A few organizations that can help you with your diagnosis and/or treatment are: The Waiting Room Entertainment, Project Scleroderma, Scleroderma Research Foundation, Scleroderma United, and National Scleroderma Foundation. #scleroderma #sayscleroderma #rise4rare #rarediseasediversity #raiseawareness #zebrastrong

Did you know that REMS technology can be used in some clinical situations where traditional DXA scans might fall short? In a paper on fragility score, Echolight’s REMS-based Bone Mineral Density (BMD) T-score was able to measure a significantly lower BMD value in comparison to the DXA BMD T-score in fractured patients with secondary osteoporosis (caused by conditions like diabetes and anorexia). This suggests that REMS may be more sensitive in detecting reduced bone density in such patients. Echolight’s REMS technology offers precise measurements in patients with specific conditions like secondary osteoporosis, chronic kidney disease, and rheumatoid arthritis, making it a valuable tool in managing bone health. There is a significant need for innovative pharmacological treatments in Systemic Sclerosis (SSc). A recent Spherix report shows nearly all rheumatologists rate the unmet need in SSc as “extremely high,” the highest among rheumatic diseases. With nearly half of patients not optimally managed, new treatments are crucial. ✨𝐈𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐢𝐩𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭? According to many authors, the incidence of osteomyelitis in the world is increasing, doubling its rate between the 1960s and the 2010s. Despite the growing number of publications in this area, this disease still represents a major challenge for orthopedists around the world. This study aimed to highlight the continued importance and utility of plain radiography as a rapid, cost-effective, and readily accessible examination in the diagnostic process. Our study shows that radiographic findings in chronic osteomyelitis were universally observed in all patients studied, demonstrating a high degree of concordance among specialists. #osteomyelitis, #boneinfection, #musculoskeletaldisorders https://lnkd.in/ez7ypaqK

Primary care physicians correctly diagnose #alzheimer’s disease about 61% of the time. Neurologists have an accuracy rate of about 73%. A new blood based test, relying on the pTau217 assay from ALZpath Inc., can accurately identify about 90% of cases. This is a great example of the importance of molecular #biomarkers, but it doesn’t stop there. Teal Omics is using molecules in the blood as a starting point to explore the complex networks that are impacted by diseases of #aging in order to develop more effective treatments than the ones that are available to patients today. Together, the field is moving toward a more sophisticated understanding of disease processes and the best ways to treat them. https://lnkd.in/g4h5tx4J

Living with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) can be challenging, but new advancements are helping to make diagnosis and monitoring less invasive. Intestinal ultrasound—a non-invasive tool—is changing the game for patients with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, offering real-time insights into the bowel's condition without the need for scopes or biopsies. Read our latest article to learn how this innovation is already improving the quality of life for many by making care more accessible and less intrusive: https://lnkd.in/e8B_J8hH #IBD #CrohnsDisease #UlcerativeColitis Pfizer

Dr. Cecil Alport reported on a phenotype familial pattern of blood in the urine, kidney disease, and hearing loss termed "Hereditary Familial Congenital Haemorrhagic Nephritis" in 1927. This is referenced as the first publication that eventually has lead to establishment of "Alport syndrome". We have come some far! We have gone from 1st recognizing more severe X-linked and AR causes to dominant with reduced penetrance and variable expressivity presentations. See a recent review and the original 1927 publication links below. #genechat #Alportsyndrome #NKF https://lnkd.in/gYAmqHDV https://lnkd.in/gBgdefXy
