Thanks to the visionaries at Innovation Forum for putting on the organization's inaugural sustainable packaging event in Philadelphia last week! I had the honor of taking the main stage for a panel discussion alongside Kenvue's David Lickstein and Opella's Heidi Graham, while my colleague Matt Kopac facilitated engaging small-group conversations. The two-day program brought together a diverse group of companies and NGOs committed to making a difference. Here are some highlights from our discussions: — The upcoming negotiations at INC 5 could lead to a globally aligned Plastics Treaty with a critical focus on reduction and circularity. — While voluntary and state actions are driving change among industry leaders, federal policy has the potential to level the playing field. — A few tips for companies: Build EPR costs into your brand P&L, broaden the business case beyond just cost savings, and align innovations with existing recycling streams! Mary Ellen is a sustainability analyst at Trayak, a sustainability software solutions and consulting company recognized for its pioneering EcoImpact platform dedicated to advancing product and packaging sustainability. In her role, Mary Ellen works directly with packaging engineers, designers, and sustainability professionals in different industries to help them meet their sustainability goals. By leveraging advanced data analytics, she uncovers areas for improvement within a company's product and packaging portfolio.  Here is a synposis of Mary Ellen's topic: Beyond Traditional Testing: A Holistic Framework to Assess Packaging Performance It is time to reexamine and broaden the assessment criteria for package performance beyond physical testing standards. Acknowledging sustainability's rising prominence as a standard rather than an exception, there's a pressing need to augment the traditional physical testing to become a more holistic approach. This evolution involves integrating environmental impacts and a methodology by which companies can customize scorecards based on their priorities and perform tradeoffs while assessing packaging and product designs. This approach not only aligns with the contemporary landscape, but also ensures a comprehensive and informed assessment of the overall performance of the package and product. 

Circular economy in packaging: Is your company ready for the demands of Generation Z? The circular economy is gaining in importance – driven by regulatory requirements #PPWR and the expectations of #GenerationZ.
