🌍 Celebrating the legacy of Marie Skłodowska-Curie and the impactful work her namesake program continues to enable in addressing today’s most urgent environmental challenges! The VALIAS Project, Coastline-msca, and ClearClimate projects are proud to be funded under the @Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions by the European Commission. Through this support, we have joined forces as an Alliance focused on driving sustainable innovation and promoting climate resilience within marine, coastal, and climate adaptation sectors. Together, we aim to tackle some of the most critical environmental issues by enhancing coastal protection, fostering sustainable resource management, and improving climate adaptation strategies. This partnership not only aligns with the #European Green Deal and #Horizon Europe’s Clusters 4 and 5 but also reinforces Europe’s commitment to a sustainable future. In the spirit of collaboration and Marie Skłodowska-Curie’s enduring dedication to scientific discovery, we’re excited to announce plans for a series of rotational webinars, shared outreach events, and policy engagement initiatives. Each webinar will focus on different areas of expertise within this Alliance: sustainable marine resources (VALIAS), coastal ecosystem protection (COASTLINE), and climate adaptation (ClearClimate). Our collective efforts will also be highlighted at the Aquaculture Europe 2025 event in Valencia, Spain, where we’ll advocate for sustainable practices and discuss key policy issues around resource management. As Marie Skłodowska-Curie remains a beacon for researchers worldwide, we hope our joint efforts honor her legacy by fostering sustainable solutions that protect ecosystems, enhance climate resilience, and promote environmental stewardship. Here’s to advancing scientific innovation that safeguards our planet for future generations! 🌱 Cyprus University of Technology Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH) Politecnico di Bari Aegean Solutions SA #MarieCurie #MSCA #HorizonEU #Sustainability #ClimateAction #EnvironmentalProtection #HorizonResultsBooster #VALIAS #COASTLINE #ClearClimate #EuropeanGreenDeal #ClimateAdaptation #ResourceEfficiency #Collaboration #CUT

Two years ago, I had the incredible opportunity to study the Invisible Burden of tourism on Block Island, Rhode Island for Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health under the direction of Megan Epler Wood and O'Shannon Burns. While tourism is an important revenue stream for many destinations around the world, it can also produce significant costs that are typically not accounted for in the budgets of local governments. These costs, or the “Invisible Burden” of tourism, put pressures on environmental and socio-cultural resources like the overuse of public utilities, the degradation of natural landscapes, and a lack of affordable housing for residents. Understanding these costs is critical for effective tourism management. More information about the Invisible Burden first reported by EplerWood International can be found here: https://lnkd.in/gQY5RMi6 It is an honor to have the work we conducted in Block Island to be included in the recently announced Handbook on Managing Nature-Based Tourism Destinations Amid Climate Change alongside numerous leaders in the sustainable tourism field. Responsible management is vital for maintaining resilient destinations and to ensure that the benefits of tourism outweigh the costs. Considering tourism holistically will help safeguard these destinations for future generations to explore and expand their worldview through the discovery of travel.

🌍 Today, October 24, we celebrate the International Day against Climate Change. On this important day, we highlight the LIFE COSTAdapta project, which seeks to adapt the vulnerable coast of Gran Canaria to the rise in sea level. Using an innovative tidal pool-reef system, the project combines traditional methods with advanced solutions to strengthen coastal resilience, protect the local tourism-dependent economy, and preserve key habitats for biodiversity and local communities. 💼 Funded by the EU's LIFE Programme, this 7-year project, with a budget of EUR 3,409,864, is led by the Gran Canaria Island Energy Council and is supported by seven partners, including the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the Finnova Foundation. 📌 Find out more about how LIFE COSTAdapta contributes to sustainable coastal management and climate resilience. 📎https://lnkd.in/dDqTCrsr CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency, LIFE Programme Consejo Insular de la Energía de Gran Canaria FINNOVA FOUNDATION Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Universidad de Cantabria INGECID ECOncrete Fundación para el Desarrollo Sostenible, Canarias Recicla #LIFECOSTAdapta #CambioClimático #AdaptaciónCostera #GranCanaria #Turismo #Sostenibilidad #ArrecifesDeMarea #Economía #ErosiónCostera #PactoVerdeEuropeo #LIFEAmplifiers
