One of the things I enjoy about translation is discovering new terms and expanding my knowledge. Recently, while working on a project, I came across the term "Passive Income." 💵 Initially, I didn’t know much about it, but after some research, I learned that passive income is money you can earn with minimal effort, without working a traditional job. It can come from sources like rental properties or dividend stocks. There are many ways to generate passive income, and I believe everyone should have a source of it. Earlier this week, we were working on a translation for a fitout company. I’m not one to just go with my gut on things, so while reviewing, I thought I’d look up the word “fitout” to understand it better, so we could provide the client with the best possible options in Arabic. Of course, when you search for “fitout meaning in Arabic” the first thing our dear friend Google gives us is the translation from their machine translation software. I’ve talked about this previously, how GT’s work is easily “edited” by anyone, and if enough edits are made, it then shows as the “correct” translation. Information overload ⚠️ Recently, I started reading again, thanks to the Riyada | ريادة community’s book club run by the lovely Hanaa Abou-Khreibeh 😊 In this month’s book Never Split the Difference, I spotted this gem of a sentence: “we can process only about seven pieces of information in our conscious mind at any given moment”. 😳😳😳 Regardless of whether the exact number is correct or not, it does make sense—we are all suffering from information overload these days. People are even being diagnosed with ADHD left and right, because we’ve lost our ability to focus and concentrate. In a lengthy discussion on Tuesday afternoon with the awesome Lara Khouri, we spoke about the same thing, along with how we actually do this to ourselves by not setting boundaries on our notifications 🔔 It got me thinking about how we can streamline operations at Aurora Hikma to ensure that we’re not adding to the information overload we all have in a given day. 📈 Do you know what language is spoken in your target market? For instance, if you are expanding your eLearning business to the Middle East, Arabic, or better said, Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), is usually one of the official languages in many countries in the Middle East. MSA is the language used in literature, academia, print and mass media, and law and legislation, though it is generally not spoken as a first language. Modern Standard Arabic is used in these countries: Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, the Palestinian Territories, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. If you are targeting any of these countries, translating into MSA only will work. But consider whether you could also subtitle or use synthetic voiceovers, for eLearning video content, into MSA (or even other regional variants) to ensure your course content resonates with the local learners in their spoken language. Planning, snuggles, and client work. Three things I’ve been up to the past few weeks while I disappeared off the face of social media. 📄 Planning is such an integral part of my life, that I do it even when I’m not writing the plans down on paper – both digital and physical. I even was planning while in labor 😅 🤗 Snuggles... what else would you expect a mom to do with her newborn? I’m sure you remember this as “spot the 2 differences between picture A and picture B” from those books 📚 our parents used to get us to keep us from annoying them, especially on long trips 😅 😵 the percent sign comes to the left of Arabic numerals, not to the right 😵 this percent sign is wrong Yes, you read that right ✅ There is a different percentage sign you should be using in Arabic: ٪؜ See how much cuter it is? And sleeker, too. I’m sure my colleagues in design will appreciate it. But I digress.
