The 4th REPURPOSE consortium meeting hosted by Photon Mission BV took place on October 14-15 in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. We shared the most significant results after two years of our project inception, discussed strategies, and, during breakout sessions, explored ways to plan the project's next steps. A huge thank you to all the partners who attended the meeting, especially the entire Photon Mission team, for their hospitality. Stay tuned for more news on #REPurpose upcoming results! Some may know this, but I was invited by Arup and the World Circular Economy Forum WCEF to be a panelist at the Built Environment Accelerator Series Event on the 17th of April. I would love to extend my thanks to all involved. Some may call talking too fast, some may call it passion and excitement but you are welcome to take your moment to listen to experts on stage talking about Business Cases in the Built Environment, where we discuss bridging theory into action and what is working, what isn't and what is needed. Some key outtakes from my involvement in the discussion includes; > Lifespans of retail spaces being about 5 years long as opposed to architectural buildings and the whole process from concept, development, refit and closing requires a different way of embedding circular processes in it. > The availability of alternative materials are still quite out of reach at the scale required and while we are feeling the economical uncertainties, companies are unable to invest or partner with companies for sustainable solutions. > While there are drivers, like the European GreenDeal as an example, these are legislative. Policy makers need to push the agenda and make companies responsible and accountable for their planetary degredation. Let me know if you have any thoughts and comments 🌱😊 #circular #sustainability #retail #design Circular Buildings Toolkit - Business Cases for Building Circular - Stream link:

‘But now sustainability is such a political category that it's getting more and more difficult to think about it in a serious way. Sustainability has become an ornament.’ - Rem Koolhaas #sustainability is integral to the functionality of the building and throughout its lifecycle. Architecture and #retrofit need to head in the direction of reducing carbon footprint rather than the mathematical #netzero via carbon offset. Thanks to Constructive Thinking Studio Limited for sponsoring the research and study trip 2024 to the Netherlands, one of the greenest countries. We now have just a little over 25 years to hit net zero in the UK #DESNZ #2050

Announcing our May Circular Chat featuring Esteban Lopez Ochoa! ♻️ Developing processes for assessing demolition and code enforcement can allow cities to plan for neighborhood preservation, infill, and adaptive reuse, as well as deconstruction. Artificial Intelligence methods can help identifying properties with rehabilitation needs that could be great candidates for circularity projects. Join us this month to hear how these processes contribute a circular city with a dive into the research from Esteban López Ochoa, Ph.D. Assistant Professor, Urban and Regional Planning Program Lead from the School of Architecture and Planning at UTSA. The event is free, but space is limited - advance registration required. Register here: https://lnkd.in/g66AMJH4 Circular Chats is a monthly thought leadership series featuring local champions of circular economy. Designed to shine the spotlight on critical work, events typically feature a presentation on a specific circular economy topic followed by an engaging discussion. The #DrasticProject was recently featured as part of the United Nations’ Buildings and Climate Global Forum in Paris. At the forum, 70 countries supported the Déclaration de Chaillot, demonstrating their commitment to reducing carbon emissions and embracing circular practices in construction. Key points highlighted in the declaration include: - Prioritising sustainable materials - Promoting building renovation - Adopting a whole life cycle approach - Emphasising integrated design - Fostering collaboration and innovation The #DrasticProject aligns seamlessly with these objectives. Via five ‘Demonstrator’ projects, Drastic aims to showcase varied and innovative solutions to reduce whole life carbon and the climate impact of construction across the entire construction value chain in Europe, whilst increasing and improving circularity. By focusing on sustainability and collaboration, the #DrasticProject aims to lead the way towards a more sustainable European built environment. Material success means a lot of different things. In this case we’re talking about sustainability. Thank you Monocle for including fuseproject CEO and Founder Yves Béhar in your recent coverage of City Cortex in Lisbon. As an exercise in pushing the performance and application of materials, Yves Béhar partnered with City Cortex City to explore the intersection between contemporary urban contexts and one of nature's most versatile and sustainable raw materials: cork. “Cork is the perfect material to express these qualities as it is both protective by insulating from sound and the cold, as well as soft and natural in ways that people love. A person can pause for a few seconds, and feel the change created by the material and the form.” For the past 20 years, fuseproject have led the use of sustainable materials in the development of products and services that deliver impactful solutions and raise awareness of critical issues. Our work with Herman Miller, The Ocean Cleanup, and TELO Trucks has helped leaders bring new products and services to market that deepen our understanding of sustainability while advancing ESG initiatives.
