Hey everyone, Let's talk about clinical trials and why some people might be hesitant to participate, and how we can change that. Here are some reasons why people might be reluctant: Lack of Awareness: Many people aren't aware of what clinical trials entail or how they can benefit from them. Without understanding the purpose and potential impact of clinical research, they may be hesitant to participate. Fear of the Unknown: Clinical trials involve trying out new treatments or procedures, which can be intimidating for some. Fear of the unknown, including potential side effects or outcomes, may deter individuals from volunteering. Concerns about Safety: Safety is a significant concern for potential participants. They may worry about the risks involved in trying new treatments or procedures, especially if they perceive the trial as experimental or risky. Mistrust in the Healthcare System: Historical instances of exploitation and unethical practices in medical research have led to a lingering mistrust of the healthcare system, particularly among marginalized communities. So, how can we overcome these barriers and encourage more people to participate in clinical trials? Education and Awareness: We need to educate the public about the importance of clinical research and its role in advancing medical knowledge and improving patient care. Transparency and Trustworthiness: Building trust is crucial. Researchers and healthcare professionals must prioritize transparency and ethical conduct throughout the clinical trial process. Open communication about risks, benefits, and procedures, as well as ensuring participant confidentiality and informed consent, can foster trust and confidence in the research process. Community Engagement: Engaging with local communities and stakeholders is essential for building trust and ensuring that clinical trials are conducted ethically and responsibly. Support Services and Resources: Providing support services, such as transportation assistance, childcare, or compensation for time and expenses, can help alleviate practical barriers to participation. Additionally, offering access to resources and support networks can empower participants to make informed decisions and feel valued throughout the trial process. Diverse Representation: It's essential to ensure that clinical trial participants reflect the diversity of the population affected by the condition under study. Recruiting participants from diverse backgrounds helps ensure that research findings are applicable and beneficial to all communities. The event, organized by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), aimed to highlight innovative approaches to make clinical trials more inclusive and accessible to all Americans. The director of the OSTP emphasized that despite being one of the wealthiest countries, the U.S. faces unacceptable health inequities, with dozens of countries boasting longer life expectancies. Historically, clinical trials have underrepresented minority groups, leading to disparities in healthcare outcomes. In conversations about increasing diversity in clinical trials, trust is often addressed. Many companies are not taking steps to deserve the trust of communities of color and underrepresented patients in trials. Deserving trust is not solely reaching out to communities and having conversations (this is still important) - it is fixing company practices and procedures; it means ensuring transparency in trials, timely communication of trial results to participants and the public, and affordable post-trial access. At the World Medical Association General Assembly last week, the Declaration of Helsinki posited that researchers “have a duty to make publicly available the results of their research on human participants and are accountable for the timeliness, completeness, and accuracy of their reports.” In this STAT News article, it is deeply dismaying to read about the lack of timely information the public and patients receive. Industry and researchers need to do much better. PR campaigns can only go so far. It is hard work and many profit motives internally, I'm sure, but it is way beyond time for companies to have more integrity and transparency in the full cycle of clinical trials. Companies should continue asking themselves: Are you taking steps to deserve the trust of underrepresented communities at the most fundamental level? Our generation of patients, especially, is paying close attention, and I feel strongly that, in working with my community of young adult patients at Generation Patient, we are equipped with the tools, resources, and community to demand better. https://lnkd.in/gpcxphY9 ed silverman

But for me, today is about recognising the participants and their families. Without them, none of this progress would be possible.   It's easy to overlook the burden of participating in a clinical trial. We all know rigour and strict protocols are necessary for safety and advancement.  But juggling travel, appointments, medication adherence, waiting and uncertainty is a daily challenge for families globally.    So, Happy Clinical Trials Day to every person who has taken that leap 🚀 And to those children and families yet to take that step, know that we strive daily to ensure that you'll feel safe, supported, and cared for from the moment your clinical trial journey begins.   At Little Journey, we're on a mission to be the catalyst for data-driven, patient-centric care. It is essential to recognise the value of every participant in every clinical trial - beyond the significance of their data.

Democratizing Clinical Trials: A Rallying Call for Change On May 8, 2024, the prestigious Milken Institute Global Conference brought together healthcare leaders to discuss a crucial issue: expanding diversity in clinical trials. As Silas Buchanan, CEO of OurHealthyCommunity, took the stage, Michelle McMurry-Heath, CEO of Biotechquity Clinical, looked on, eager to engage in this pivotal dialogue. Despite recent awareness, women and people of color remain underrepresented in clinical studies, hindering the pursuit of truly representative and equitable healthcare solutions. The work of bringing diversity to research is complex, but these leaders, including Raven Clinical, are determined to pave the way forward. One of the resounding messages was the need to build trust within communities that have faced mistreatment or exploitation by the scientific community. Fabian Sandoval, President and CEO of the Emerson Clinical Research Institute, emphasized the importance of breaking down barriers and fostering genuine connections. "It's for us physicians to take off our lab coats, take off the bow tie, and talk normally to people," he said, underscoring the value of investing time to develop direct relationships with patients. This call to action resonated throughout the panel, as experts acknowledged the scarcity of time in healthcare but recognized its pivotal role in achieving meaningful progress. Doctors and researchers working on clinical trials must be willing to dedicate the necessary time to build trust and engage with diverse communities truly.
