This is a shout out to the wonderful Edwina Dunn for reminding me how great it is to connect 'just because'. She reached out because she saw we have a shared interest in rewilding. On this online platform, where communications could remain digital-only and people may never fully connect, Edwina's strategy of inviting people to have a brief live online chat, with no ulterior motive, is refreshing and meaningful. And, I feel like the lucky one because I just got to connect with someone who is helping to create important change in laws to enable better outcomes for rewilding projects, especially involving large herbivores. This is such a pivotal part of the picture. Current laws are focused on zoos or farm animals only and are restrictive at best, if not outright invasive, when applied in rewilding projects - a completely different context with dramatically less human intervention, by design. Knowledge is Power Today at the zoo, I noticed something interesting. Most people, myself included, could identify only a fraction of the animals, relying on signs or others for the rest. A couple of times, while explaining animals to my daughter, I overheard others repeating my words to their families as if it were their own discovery! It hit me: knowledge is power. The less we know, the more we depend on others. But by constantly learning, we grow confident and independent. In two weeks “preventive culling” killing wolves and cubs in Switzerland begins This week 300 hunters received only one day training to kill wolves. More than the wolf population in their cantons. Watch this space for actions .. we must convince farmers, and politicians to be less of (knee) jerks with their aggressive attitudes to biodiversity. Even the IUCN wolf specialist group is aghast. Lucie Wuethrich is a tireless defender of wolves “Time for compassionate coexistence In her post, the tireless advocate for wolf protection Lucie Wuethrich writes about increasing push for wolf slaughter across Europe, and particularly so in Switzerland. She says, "Wolves are coming under increasing pressure, not least in Europe where old fears, fables and prejudices are being resurrected to justify weakening their protection and allow for mass culling. Switzerland is spearheading the initiative and could see its native, supposedly protected lupine numbers reduced by up to 70%, well below the minimum sustainable population required to ensure the survival of the species in Switzerland." The slaughter would leave Switzerland with that minimum viable population ... they say. But that is utter rubbish. If we really want the biodiversity-rich nature we claim to want, then nothing should be 'minimum viable' - we must allow nature to flow, to thrive - and not just the wolf but everywhere - if we allow that, if we have the courage and the wisdom to step back (and get off our high horse), then wolves will do what wolves do and biodiversity-rich nature will make a dramatic comeback.” Read more in the links below
