Today's Warning Letter Wednesday involved function mushroom GMPs, or their lack thereof. Functional mushroom products are enjoying a surge in popularity, but with increased attention comes tighter regulatory scrutiny. Recent FDA actions underscore the importance of proper manufacturing practices, especially in light of the concerning Diamond Shruumz recall. Here’s what we can learn from the GMP violations cited in this week’s Warning Letter Wednesday: Key GMP Oversights: Lack of Basic Procedures for Incoming Product Testing and QC Release The company, likely a copacker, handled bulk mushroom gummies for packaging and labeling but lacked foundational GMP protocols. This serves as a cautionary tale about the risks of choosing low-cost vendors without verifying their quality systems. Inadequate Procedures for Handling Product Returns A procedure for managing returned products is essential to prevent counterfeit or unsafe items from re-entering the supply chain. The absence of such protocols increases the risk of harmful products reaching consumers—a terrifying prospect for any responsible company. Failure to Retain Reserve Samples Retained samples are critical for investigating complaints and verifying product integrity. The FDA mandates that these samples be preserved for at least one year past the expiration date or two years post-distribution, yet this company failed to meet even this basic requirement. Reserve samples also play a role in validating expiration dates, an area this company overlooked. Lessons Learned: This case illustrates the consequences of ignoring GMP fundamentals. The FDA provided opportunities to correct these issues through 483 observations, but incomplete responses led to a formal warning letter. The takeaway? When in doubt, invest in expert guidance to navigate regulatory requirements effectively. Compliance shortcuts may save costs upfront but can lead to long-term reputational and financial damages. #WarningLetterWednesday #GMP #Regulatory https://lnkd.in/gUtRCcx3

As 2024 marks 30 years since #DSHEA, CRN President & CEO Steven Mister reflected on the evolving #dietarysupplement regulations in a NutraIngredients byline. Mister highlighted CRN’s balanced approach to regulation, advocating for policies that enhance FDA oversight, like mandatory product listing, while pushing back against overly restrictive laws. He also emphasized CRN’s leadership in self-regulation, including guidelines for #melatonin supplements and e-commerce transparency. "CRN's job is to navigate the landscape and lead our companies toward a climate that fosters consumer confidence while preventing burdensome regulations that would stymie the industry," said Mister.
