British Columbia is making history with five new electric tugboats, which set an example for clean maritime practices. Switching to hybrid and fully electric tugs cuts greenhouse gas emissions and helps protect marine life. One of the new tugboat owners is HaiSea Marine (owned by the Haisla Nation and Seaspan). Their new tug, the HaiSea Wamis, runs on batteries, significantly reducing emissions, reducing underwater noise, and supporting the economy. Like the Haisla Nation, the Gitga'at Nation is focused on bringing clean energy projects into the community. Their work in sustainable forestry shows how Indigenous communities are driving green progress. Efforts like introducing electric tugboats prove it's possible to protect the environment while boosting the economy. Read more about the electric tugboats: https://lnkd.in/gc2gDkA9

SAFEEN Group's Damen RSD-E Tug 2513 Sets New Guinness World Record™ for Electric Tugboat Power Shipping Arabia, November 19, 2024 — In a groundbreaking achievement for maritime innovation, the SAFEEN Group, operating within AD Ports Group’s Maritime & Shipping Cluster, and Damen Shipyards Group have clinched a Guinness World Records™ title for the Most Powerful Electric Tugboat. The Damen RSD-E Tug 2513 Bu Tinah set the record with a peak bollard pull of 78.2 tonnes, marking a significant milestone in the performance capabilities of fully electric marine vessels. The historic event took place at Khalifa Port, the flagship facility of AD Ports Group, coinciding with ADIPEC, the world’s premier energy event. The timing underscored the event's focus on energy transition, highlighting the tug’s zero-emission operations from tank to wake and its role in advancing sustainability within the maritime sector. Captain Ammar Mubarak Al Shaiba, CEO of the Maritime & Shipping Cluster at AD Ports Group, reflected on the record’s significance, stating, “This Guinness World Record™ achievement underlines that the shift to alternative energy sources does not sacrifice performance. We take immense pride that our first fully electric tug not only leads in the Middle East but also commands global attention with its accolade. Moreover, its contribution to enhancing the sustainability and cost efficiency of our operations—particularly in fuel savings—is crucial. This vessel has become a pivotal element of our Marine Services fleet and our broader strategy towards electrification.” The RSD-E Tug 2513 is a model of efficiency, evolving from the already proficient diesel-powered RSD Tug 2513. Its all-electric propulsion system enables completely emission-free operations, with the capacity to perform at least two towing operations on a single charge and an ability to recharge within just two hours. Further facilitating the SAFEEN Group’s acquisition of this pioneering technology, Damen Financial Services provided a tailored lease agreement, promoting broader access to innovative, environmentally friendly maritime solutions. This initiative is part of Damen’s ongoing commitment to becoming the leading sustainable maritime solutions provider. Source: The Maritime Executive #Safeen #Damen #Maritime #Tugboat #Sustainability
