This week on Bunkerspot, we visited maritime stakeholders in #Finland to discuss some of the key issues facing the industry. Speaking to our reporter Tom Barlow-Brown, the Head of Maritime Policy & Safety at the Finnish Shipowners' Association / Suomen Varustamot / Rederierna i Finland, Carolus Ramsay, highlighted the unique challenges the country’s ice-class vessels are facing in the context of #EU and #IMO #emission targets. We also caught up with the Vice President of Sales for Business Line Projects at Auramarine Ltd, Tuomas Häkkinen, who outlined the Finnish #fuel systems firm’s hopes to mitigate high costs of green fuel #bunkering for #shipowners. Next week sees the start of the ISWG-GHG 1 meeting at the International Maritime Organization's London HQ. Commenting ahead of this - and the subsequent MEPC 82 meeting - the CEO of shipping giant A.P. Moller - Maersk, Vincent Clerc, said that ‘bold steps’ are needed by the IMO and member states to support shipping’s decarbonisation, including introducing a global maritime #fuelstandard and a pricing mechanism ‘that ensures price parity, levels the playing field, and supports large-scale #green fuel projects.’ In the US, #gas industry stakeholders convened in #Houston for Gastech 2024 where the number of AiPs for #ammonia-fuelled vessel designs – including for SHI’s 9,300 TEU boxship, Seaspan Corporation’s dual fuel feeder ship and HD HMD’s ammonia bunkering vessel – was perhaps indicative of growing #momentum for ammonia as a marine fuel. In other news, in a move that is expected to support the development of #methanol as a marine fuel in #Japan, A.P.Moller – Maersk co-hosted the country’s first ‘methanol bunkering simulation’ at the Port of #Yokohama; the U.S.Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration announced it will award #grants totalling nearly $300 million to support projects such as replacing old vessels with #electric ships that reduce #GHG pollution and improve air quality, expanding fleets, and building new #terminals and docks; and a Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD)-led consortium successfully completed ship-to-ship transfers of ammonia at anchorages within the Port of #Dampier.
