Our Human Capital Management Master of Science program had the privilege of hosting an extraordinary guest speaker, Peter Rutigliano, Ph.D., in the Effective Partnership Strategies course this spring semester. Peter is a Partner and Behavioral Health Practice Lead at Mercer, a global HR consultancy. His approach to gathering data for evidenced based decision-making to engage and build resilience with the workforce was truly insightful. Here are some key takeaways from his engaging talk: - In Peter’s early career, he learned much about resiliency from his coworkers while employed as a garbageman at a private sanitation company in New York. He saw the role of purpose in one’s job that led to pride and optimal performance, no matter the task or role. - Three use cases were shared to demonstrate the importance of an engaged workforce: - At a US steelmaker, Peter measured that engaged steel mill employees required 34% fewer labor hours to produce a given ton of steel. - Fatalities and injuries were reduced by 90% when examining the correlation between leadership, employee engagement, and safety performance. - During a difficult period of layoffs at an automotive manufacturer, cost savings and engagement scores both rose due to the transparency exhibited by its trusted CEO. Peter works with clients to identify and understand drivers of engagement for their employees. The journey usually begins with a pulse survey based on a three-factor ACE model (Achievement, Camaraderie & Equity), that serves as a ‘health check’ of the organization and informs action. For many of Peter’s clients, the business case was clear - when decisions were made for the benefit of the mental wellbeing of employees, the results were lower absenteeism, increased productivity, and reduced turnover. Peter’s enthusiasm for his work and pragmatic examples highly resonated with students. A sincere thank you to Peter for sharing his wealth of knowledge and experience with us.
